Prachatice District in South Bohemia extends from the historic town of Prachatice to the foothills of the Bohemian Forest. When choosing accommodation, first decide on your main focus: culture along the Golden Path, trails in the Šumava area or a visit to the Renaissance complex of Kratochvíle call for different starting points. A hotel or holiday home in the district is not automatically close to all the destinations.
Prachatice and the Golden Path
The historic centre of Prachatice has been protected as an urban conservation area since 1981. The old town walls are also cultural attractions. The Golden Path connected Bohemia with Bavaria; in the Middle Ages, salt was transported from Bavaria to Prachatice. Branches of the route led from Passau to both Prachatice and Vimperk. Today there is an extensive network of signposted hiking trails, but the total length of 631 kilometres does not describe a single day hike. Choose a specific route and check its elevation profile, return route and access points. For a day in town, accommodation near the historic centre may be suitable; for a longer hike, a different starting point may work better.
The Bohemian Forest and short nature trails
The hilly countryside around Prachatice gives way to the Bohemian Forest. The core of Boubínský prales has been protected since 1858. The path to Boubínské jezírko is described as suitable for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs; this does not mean that the entire primeval forest is accessible. Jezerní slať is a raised bog on the Šumava plateau. Along the Povydří educational trail, information boards explain the landscape; cycling is not permitted there. For each individual nature destination, check how to get there, the protection rules, the season and the section that is actually accessible. Vimperk also has a town trail suitable for families. These different destinations should not be crammed into an overfull day plan.
Kratochvíle and Netolice
The Renaissance complex of Kratochvíle can be visited on an extended tour of the villa and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Its garden has compacted sand paths with step-free access. Bicycles must be wheeled through the garden; bicycle stands are located outside the castle gate. A cycle path connects the estate with Netolice. If you plan to use this route, check the current tour schedule, path conditions and return journey. Staying near Netolice or Kratochvíle is a practical alternative to accommodation in Prachatice.
Choosing a base in the district
For a stay of two to five nights, it may make sense to choose one main focus and a few suitable excursions rather than trying to visit all the natural and cultural sites at once. Compare the actual address of a holiday apartment, holiday home or hotel with your chosen destination. Prices, availability, parking and amenities depend on the individual offer. The direct list of places below is for geographic selection; it does not confirm attractions or accommodation at every listed location.
