Lčovice is divided into an upper part around the castle and a lower part by the railway station in the Volyňka valley. These two landmarks are useful for finding your way around: the castle defines the upper part, while a blue-marked hiking trail to the Věnec hillfort starts at the station. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lčovice, you can plan your stay around your interests—for example, local history, archaeology, hikes or an event date.
Castle and Local History
Lčovice Castle is a protected cultural monument. Its grounds include a Baroque garden pavilion and a hunting lodge. Above its entrance, the hunting tower near the castle bears the combined coat of arms of the Hýzrl of Chodů family and Eleonora Alžběta von Donín. These are among the town’s historical landmarks, alongside a specific architectural detail and a heraldic emblem.
The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, dating from 1714, stands above Lčovice. Another link to the town’s history leads to the castle: in 1881, the architect Josef Zítek, known for designing the National Theatre, married Berta, the daughter of the castle-owning family, there. The chapel and the wedding represent different historical connections—one is marked by its year of construction, the other by a precisely dated event.
Věnec: Hillfort and Hiking Trails
The 765-metre-high Věnec hill lies southeast of Lčovice. The hillfort site near Lčovice is triangular in shape and surrounded by ramparts approximately 1.5 km long. The entrance gate to the acropolis is still clearly visible. The hillfort was a functioning settlement of major regional importance during the Hallstatt and La Tène periods. At Věnec, the clearly visible layout of the site sits alongside its archaeological classification.
The blue-marked hiking trail to the hillfort starts at Lčovice railway station. The approximately 2.7 km route first follows an easy forest track and then a steeply climbing path. When planning, take into account both the approximate distance and the transition to the steep climb. Trail conditions can change seasonally; check the latest conditions before setting out.
Another option is the approximately 18 km tourist route “Turistická trasa krajem Jiřiny Jiráskové a pradávné jeskyně,” which passes through Lčovice. It is considerably longer than the route from the railway station to the hillfort, and Lčovice is one of its stops. From Čkyně, you can also follow an approximately 3.3 km field path along the Volyňka to Lčovice railway station, or take the train. Check the latest transport conditions before travelling.
Events in Lčovice
Every year on January 1, Lčovice hosts a hike to the summit of Věnec. Another opportunity to combine a visit to the area with a longer route is the recurring “Putování Keltskou stezkou”: the 27 km route starts in Kubova Huť and is accompanied by a Celtic celebration in Lčovice.
The Celtic festival includes an authentic Celtic camp and demonstrations of historical crafts and weapons. The programme also features craft markets, creative workshops for children, horse rides and gold panning. Programme details may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival or the January 1 hike, check the specific dates and arrangements before travelling.
