Kristanov can be planned from several perspectives: its late Baroque church reflects the history of the settlement, while cycling and hiking routes offer different ways to explore the surrounding area. There are also two distinct protected-area designations: the project area of the Blanice NPP includes the cadastral area of Kristanov; part of the cultural landscape lies within the Šumava Protected Landscape Area. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide how much emphasis to place on architectural history, landscape, and outdoor activities, and choose a route that suits your priorities.

Church and Local History

Kristanov was founded in 1694 near Prachatice. The Church of the Name of the Lord Jesus, also called Jména Ježíš, is a simple late Baroque building dating from the end of the 18th century. It was built in 1798–1799; its entry in the heritage register was updated in 2023. The settlement was founded more than a century before the church was built. The settlement’s history and its architecture therefore represent two distinct historical reference points: the founding of the settlement and the church built later.

The architectural classification is specific: the building is described as simple and late Baroque. The construction dates of 1798–1799 provide a more precise timeframe than the general description “end of the 18th century.” Those interested in history can distinguish the founding of the settlement from the later building history and include the church as a cultural highlight in their trip plans.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The cadastral area of Kristanov is part of the project area of the Blanice NPP. In addition, part of the cultural landscape lies within the Šumava Protected Landscape Area. This distinction is useful when planning your trip if you want to understand the area’s landscape designations more precisely.

As well as the settlement’s history, two landscape-related points of reference are available to help you choose your destination. You can take the protected-area designation and the routes through the area into account without treating them as equivalent to a church visit: the church is the cultural highlight, while the protected-area information describes the geographical setting.

Cycling, Hiking and Getting There

Cycling route 1250 passes through Kristanov. Cycling route 1252 runs from the junction near Kristanov via Arnoštov and the Záhvozdský potok stream to Pernek. The routes have different starting points: the first passes through the settlement, while the junction near Kristanov is the reference point for the second. When choosing between them, you can use their routes to decide whether a stretch through Kristanov or the connection via Arnoštov and the Záhvozdský potok better suits your plans. Check the route markings and conditions before setting out.

From Prachatice, the footpath to Kristanov follows a green-marked hiking trail; part of the route may run along the “Zlatá stezka” educational trail. For planning purposes, the green markings provide a specific point of reference, while only part of the route may follow the educational trail. Check the trail markings and conditions locally before setting out.

By car, Kristanov can be reached from Prachatice via approximately 20 km, and from Volary via 15 km on roads 141 and 165. These distances are approximate; check the route before setting out. Your planning can therefore draw on several types of information: a marked footpath from Prachatice, two cycling-route options, and approximate road distances from Prachatice and Volary. First choose the mode of travel that suits your plans, then focus on local history, the landscape, or one of the routes mentioned above.
