Strážný combines historical traces of the Golden Path with winter activities. The settlement’s history, a border castle and an almost one-kilometre-long system of surviving trail remains give the place a distinctive historical character. In winter, a ski area with three drag lifts and a cross-country skiing route are added to the mix. The sites vary in scale, from a specific historic site south of the municipality to a cross-country skiing route that passes through Strážný.

Border location and historic routes

The Strážný settlement enclave developed along the Vimperk branch of the Golden Path, near the border with Germany. Its location within Šumava National Park is also geographically varied: the park boundary runs through the enclave, whose northeastern part lies outside the park. The history of the trade route also connects Strážný with Kunžvart Castle, built to protect the Golden Path.

Traces of the Golden Path and building history

On Obecní Hill, south of Strážný, there is an almost one-kilometre-long system of surviving remains of the Vimperk branch. These are among the best-preserved remains of the Golden Path. Their length and state of preservation make this site a remarkable testament to the historic route, complementing the view of its significance also seen at Kunžvart Castle.

Another historic structure is the embankment of the Weiher pond. It is considered the oldest earth-fill dam in Central Europe and dates from the 15th to 16th centuries. Petr Malovec built it between 1543 and 1547.

Kunžvart and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary

The ruins of Kunžvart Castle lie about 1.5 kilometres from the municipality of Strážný, on the eastern spur of Strážný Mountain. At 1,033 metres, it is one of the highest-altitude castles in the Czech Republic. Kunžvart was built near the national border as a royal watch castle to protect the Golden Path. Here, the history of the trade route is linked with the defensive role of a border castle.

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the castle ruins to the former Orlova Huť and to a viewpoint dedicated to Václav Hrubý. Before setting out on a hike, check the current route and trail markings, as trail conditions and markings may change. Another historic sight is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on Kamenný Hill, northwest of and above Strážný. It dates from 1834.

Winter sports in Strážný

The Strážný ski area has three drag lifts. Facilities include groomed downhill slopes with artificial snowmaking, as well as groomed cross-country ski trails. Check the ski area's seasonal operating conditions before travelling. The Šumava Ski Highway also passes through Strážný, connecting Železná Ruda with Zadní Zvonková.

For planning your winter trip, it helps to distinguish between the local facilities and the route that passes through the town: the ski area brings together lifts, downhill slopes and groomed trails, while the route connects two named places. This will help you decide whether you are interested in the facilities in Strážný or the longer connection between the two endpoints.
