Bohumilice lies on the right side of the Volyňka Valley, in the Šumava foothills. There are several different themes to choose from during your stay: the history of Zámek Skalice, the medieval Church of the Holy Trinity, a literary connection to the village, as well as trails and a linden avenue. Depending on your interests, you can focus on cultural heritage or the landscape. The village has a bus stop called “Bohumilice rozcestí”.
Castle, Church and Literary History
Zámek Skalice preserves key parts of a Renaissance fortress built in 1549. The Church of the Holy Trinity dates from the mid-13th century, taking visitors back to a much earlier era. Its archaeological site is in the cemetery on the eastern edge of Bohumilice. Two historical landmarks thus stand side by side: a medieval church and a later fortress. There is also a literary connection: Karel Klostermann wrote the novel “Strejček z nebe” in Bohumilice. Those interested in architectural history will find different points of reference in the church and fortress; the novel offers a distinct literary perspective on the village’s history. The entire castle complex, with its extensive park, is used year-round as an equestrian centre and offers riding lessons.
Linden Avenue and Trails
Bohumilická alej lines the road from Bohumilice to Bošice. It is just under one kilometre long and has 76 linden trees, estimated to be 150 years old. There are seats for visitors at a viewpoint. A hiking route marked in yellow and blue runs for 27 kilometres from Mařský vrch to Stachy, passing through Bohumilice. The distances clearly distinguish these options: an avenue just under one kilometre long and a 27-kilometre route. Near Bohumilice, the northern section of the Sudslavický okruh passes through the Opolenec Nature Reserve and wooded, rocky terrain. The Sudslavický okruh provides information about limestone quarrying and lime production, as well as the historic use of a stream’s water power. A cascade of mills and other structures illustrate this historical use. Those who choose based on more than distance will find that the Sudslavický okruh also explores lime processing and water power, while the avenue, its lindens and its viewpoint offer a different focus. The Sudslavická stezka runs around Bohumilice v Čechách railway station, making the station another named point of reference.
