Several hiking routes pass through Wiler, while historic buildings are linked to specific addresses and dates. This allows you to choose different focuses when planning your trip: paths across the Irchel, a route through the Zurich Wine Region, or a closer look at local history. The routes differ in their destinations and paths; the farmhouse and fountain also offer their own historical perspective.

Hiking Routes through Wiler

Buch am Irchel is in the Zurich Wine Region, at the foot of the Irchel between Zurich and Schaffhausen. The Irchel, at 694 metres, is considered the local mountain of the area; its observation tower and picnic area are among its distinctive features. From the Irchel Tower, the view extends across the Wine Region to the Säntis and over the Flaach Valley to Germany. The paths across the Irchel therefore offer both a specific destination and views in different directions.

The hike from Buch am Irchel to the Tössegg via the Irchel Tower passes through Oberbuch am Irchel and Wiler. To get there, take the S-Bahn to Andelfingen or Hettlingen, then a bus to “Buch am Irchel, Oberbuch”. Check connections before travelling. Another option is the “Buch a.I. – Winterthur” route, which runs from Oberbuch am Irchel via Wiler to Buch am Irchel and can be reached by train and bus. The “Irchel Circuit” also passes through Oberbuch am Irchel and Wiler, following the Schaffhausen–Zurich Trail.

“Downstream” offers a different focus: the hiking route passes through Eigental, Eigenthal Castle and Wiler. Its route includes several train stations and bus stops, including Wiler and Irchelhof, as well as Andelfingen, Kleinandelfingen Dorf and Flaach Kirche. If you would like to combine the hike with public transport, check connections for your travel date.

A hiking route through the Zurich Wine Region, marked as closed, runs from Buch am Irchel via Wiler, Berg am Irchel, Flaach, Tössegg, Teufen, Freienstein and the Irchel, returning to Buch am Irchel. It is 18.8 kilometres long and moderately difficult. Take the closed designation into account when planning, and check the status before travelling. Of the routes mentioned, this is the one with a stated distance and difficulty rating.

Historical Traces in Wiler and Buch am Irchel

The farmhouse at Wiler 25 dates from 1815. A trough fountain with a wellhead stands on Wilerstrasse at number 25 and dates from 1830; another trough fountain with a wellhead is next to Wiler 1 and dates from 1842. The dates establish a clear chronological order: the farmhouse is the oldest of the three historic buildings, while the fountain next to Wiler 1 is the newest. The Buch am Irchel Local Museum offers a different focus. The small exhibition is about the municipality and its residents; the museum opened in 1989.
