Flurlingen lies between the Rhine and the western slope of Cholfirst. Here, a public riverside area, an extensive network of hiking trails and a long village history come together. There is also a waterfall just a few minutes’ walk from Flurlingen. The area therefore offers different ways to spend your time: trails in the countryside, time by the Rhine, or insights into local history and winegrowing.

Riverside lawn by the Rhine

The riverside lawn by the Rhine is open to the public and can be used free of charge. Showers, toilets and changing rooms are available. Public transport or cycling is recommended for getting there; there is no parking on site. This covers the main practical points for a visit to the river: you can use the facilities free of charge, but should plan to get there by one of the recommended alternatives.

Hiking on Cholfirst

Cholfirst is mostly wooded and has an extensive, well-marked hiking trail network. A prominent landmark is the antenna tower on Cholfirst. Its steel structure is 96 metres high overall, and the viewing platform for hikers is 42 metres above the ground. The current facility was built and commissioned in 1973 by the PTT, as it was then known.

The Three Towers Tour is a 16.2-kilometre circular hike starting at Feuerthalen railway station. It leads to the Cholfirst transmission tower, which is located within the municipality of Flurlingen. The “Observation Towers: Cholfirst” route follows a different course: it leads to Flurlingen and continues to the bridge to Neuhausen railway station. The ViaRhenana Route 60, Schaffhausen–Rheinau stage, also passes through Flurlingen. The routes therefore differ in their format and direction: the Three Towers Tour is specified as a circular route, with its distance and starting point given, while the “Observation Towers: Cholfirst” route continues past Flurlingen towards Neuhausen.

Village history and Hilari

Flurlingen was first mentioned in 876 under the name “Flurlingin”. In 1841, it became an independent municipality again, after previously having been joined with Dachsen and Uhwiesen. For those who prefer to listen to local history, the “1150 Years of Flurlingen” podcast offers an entertaining journey through 1,150 years of village history.

Hilari is a lively tradition: every January, people from Flurlingen, Uhwiesen, Feuerthalen and Langwiesen celebrate. A regular part of the Hilari programme is Flurlinger Abend, featuring music, dancing, food, drinks and a bar. If you would like to plan your stay around Hilari, check the specific event dates before travelling.

Wine, food and tennis

Local winegrowing also offers a specific point of interest. Since 2020, 8247 has cultivated the traditional vineyard in Flurlingen according to biodynamic principles. Wines from this vineyard can be tasted at the Zwirnerei. Regular food and wine evenings with guest winemakers and culinary professionals are also held there. If you would like to plan a tasting or one of these evenings, you can check the latest dates in advance.

For tennis, the Cholfirst facility in Flurlingen has four floodlit clay courts. Check the condition of the facility again before planning a game. Depending on your interests, you can get to know Flurlingen through its trails, the riverside area, village traditions or wine offerings, without combining the different activities into a single programme.
