In Andelfingen, the Mülibach tells the story of a time when hydropower shaped everyday life and industry. Its canal system is a surviving testament to pre-industrial grain processing. For centuries, the stream powered up to six mills and ancillary businesses, including a sawmill, a grinding mill, a hemp scutching mill and an oil mill. The Halden Mill remains fully operational to this day. The stream’s source can also be pinpointed geographically: in the area known as Ursprung, about 900 metres south of the historic village centre, groundwater emerges as the source of the Mülibach. It supplies a steady 50 to 100 litres per second.

The Thur, Bridges and Trails

Andelfingen lies on the south bank of the Thur. The riverside landscape includes gravel beaches and slate banks, as well as floodplain forests, meadows, fields and woods. A riverside walk along the Thur starts and ends at Andelfingen railway station. The route to and from Andelfingen crosses the ARA suspension bridge and passes old wooden bridges. Hiking routes associated with Andelfingen also include sections of the Thur Trail and paths through Zurich’s wine country.

Another striking structure over the Thur is the covered bridge connecting Andelfingen with Kleinandelfingen. Built in 1815, it is 71.85 metres long. The bridge and the riverside paths offer different perspectives on the landscape: here the structure takes centre stage, there the course of the Thur and its banks. For a different way to explore the area, the 2.1-kilometre Vita Parcours fitness trail runs on and around the Isenberg.

Castle Park and Local History

Today’s Andelfingen Castle was built in 1740 as the residence of the then Zurich bailiff. The castle park is one of Switzerland’s most significant parks and is open to visitors free of charge during the day throughout the year; check the access information before your visit. In winter, the castle hosts cultural events featuring cabaret and other small-scale performing arts. The programme is seasonal, so it is worth checking the event dates before your trip.

Other buildings also bring the area’s history to life. The Reformed Church was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in 1666. Andelfingen has old half-timbered houses and other historically notable buildings. Cast-iron plaques on historically important buildings in Andelfingen and Kleinandelfingen explain their history and significance. For an archaeological perspective, visit Laufen, west of the station: 21 graves from the La Tène period, around 300 BC, are located there; a selection of grave goods is on display at the Swiss National Museum.

To explore the history of the mills in more depth, you can discover the mill village of Andelfingen on an excursion with a local guide. The tour lasts about two hours and can be booked year-round through the ProWeinland association. As booking arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm that bookings are available before your trip. The nearby local history archive in Kleinandelfingen preserves maps, plans, family trees, documents, newspapers, posters and other regional records; it also hosts historical exhibitions. Check the exhibitions’ accessibility before visiting.

Discover Nature and Local Events

The “Naturpfade” app introduces 13 biodiversity hotspots in Andelfingen and Kleinandelfingen and explains ecological connections. It shares information about local habitats and biodiversity conservation and is best used on a cycling tour or hike. Check whether the app is available before your trip.

The Andelfingen annual fair takes place every year on the second Wednesday in November. Its programme includes two organ concerts, each lasting about half an hour, with free admission. If you would like to plan your stay around the fair, check the dates in advance. For a taste of local produce, the farm shop at Obst- und Weinbau Wegmann sells orchard fruit as well as wine, sweet cider, flour and homemade products; the range may change.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Andelfingen has a Zurich S-Bahn railway station, a main junction with the A4 national highway and regional PostBus services. As timetables may change, check them before your trip. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the history of the mills, the buildings and local history, or the Thur and its landscape.
