The Amberg-Sulzbach region lies in Bavaria between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Its landscape is shaped by towering limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and river valleys. A stay in the region combines nature experiences with a long mining history and vibrant culinary traditions.
Hiking and exploring
A clearly defined hike follows the Felsenweg trail from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher. The route is 2.7 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of around 45 minutes. The tour combines a manageable time commitment with a striking rocky landscape. The Wacholderwanderweg is also one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Amberg-Sulzbach region.
If you are looking for a different way to get active, you will find the Bow-Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld. On a circular route of about three kilometres through the farming forest typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura, you can try traditional archery. On the water, the Vils can be travelled by canoe from Hahnbach. The route passes stretches of untouched river, castles and historic Amberg, offering a different perspective on cultural and natural landscapes.
The time of year is also important when planning cave hikes: entering the caves on the region’s cave hiking trails is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March. If visiting caves is part of your plans, take this period into account when choosing your travel dates.
Mining history and living culture
The East Bavarian Mining and Industrial Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern researches and documents mining and industry in eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive. The Erzweg trail offers another focus: it connects sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. The museum and trail offer different perspectives on a subject that has shaped the region’s history.
The Kirwan in the Amberg-Sulzbach region are among the recurring cultural events. They are celebrated every year in their respective towns and are open to visitors and locals alike. Since 2023, the Kirwan have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. If you would like to combine your trip with one of these festivals, plan around the dates in the town you intend to visit.
Wetlands and a remarkable sand mountain
The Theuern nature observation platform was built on the edge of the treatment ponds at the wastewater treatment plant. The adjacent wetland includes the Vils, its old river channels and ponds, and serves year-round as a resting and breeding ground for local birds and birds migrating from the north.
A completely different landscape awaits you at Monte Kaolino near Hirschau: the approximately 120-metre-high ski mountain is made of around 33 million tonnes of fine quartz sand and does not need snow. Monte Kaolino is considered a one-of-a-kind attraction worldwide.
Regional cuisine and brewing traditions
Many restaurants in the Amberg-Sulzbach region regularly invite guests to a traditional Schlachtschüssel feast. Dishes include Wurschtsuppn, boiled pork and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwurst made according to each establishment’s own recipes. Dates vary from one restaurant to another, so check the relevant date if you want to include this meal in your plans.
Regional brewing traditions also have several facets: authentic Upper Palatinate Zoigl is brewed in Erlheim. The Sudhang private brewery in Amberg uses hops from Illschwang, the world’s smallest hop-growing region.
Choose accommodation to suit your plans
The experiences described are spread across different locations in the region. If you are looking for a hotel in Amberg-Sulzbach, consider your overnight accommodation alongside the attractions that matter most to your trip. This lets you focus your search on the activities and themes you actually want to experience.
