The Dolomite rock formation “Alter Fritz,” visible from far away, is the landmark of Haunritz. Weigendorf also has a Kneipp water-treading facility with a rest area and sun loungers; on its circular route, the Erzweg Trail passes through Weigendorf on its way back to Hartmannshof. These features offer different perspectives on the area: a striking landscape, a place to linger and a hiking route. If you are looking for hotels in Weigendorf, you can plan your trip around whichever of these themes is most relevant to you.

Rock, water and a route to explore

“Alter Fritz” is a Dolomite rock formation and a landmark visible from far away, associated with Haunritz. For travelers who choose a destination for its landscape, the rock formation is a distinctive point of reference in the district.

The Kneipp water-treading facility in Weigendorf has a rest area and sun loungers. Both add opportunities to rest and relax. Before visiting, it is a good idea to check the facility’s current condition.

On its circular route, the Erzweg Trail passes through Weigendorf on its way back to Hartmannshof. This makes the area part of a longer hiking route. The route is a different starting point for planning than a stop at the water-treading facility: here, the focus is on the trail, while there, it is on the rest area.

Hiking and landscapes in the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination

The Amberg-Sulzbach region is in Bavaria, between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Its hiking landscape features towering limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and picturesque river valleys. The Felsenweg Trail is a 2.7-kilometer hike that takes about 45 minutes. Starting in Sackdilling, it leads through the Felsenlabyrinth rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher caves and an impressive rocky landscape. The Wacholderwanderweg Trail is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Amberg-Sulzbach region.

The Erzweg Trail is also part of the wider region: in the Amberg-Sulzbach region, it links sites with a mining tradition dating back more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. In Weigendorf, its circular route passes through the area on its way back to Hartmannshof.

The wider destination also offers different ways to combine nature and activity. At the Bow-Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld, you can try traditional archery on an approximately 3-kilometer circular course through the farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura. The Vils is navigable by canoe from Hahnbach; the route passes unspoiled stretches of river, castles and historic Amberg.

The Theuern observation platform was built at the edge of the wastewater treatment plant’s polishing ponds, providing a place to watch nature. The adjoining wetland, with the Vils, oxbow lakes and ponds, is a year-round resting and breeding ground for local birds and birds migrating from the north. On the region’s cave hiking trails, entering the caves is prohibited from October 1 to March 31.

Culture and regional cuisine

At Theuern Castle, the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum researches and documents the mining and industry of eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive. Another expression of regional culture is the Kirwa festivals: since 2023, they have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are celebrated every year in their respective communities and are open to visitors and locals alike.

One regional specialty is Schlachtschüssel, a traditional meat dish served regularly at many restaurants in the Amberg-Sulzbach region. It includes Wurschtsuppn (sausage soup), Kesselfleisch (boiled pork) and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwursts made to the restaurants’ own recipes. Dates vary by restaurant, so if you would like to include Schlachtschüssel in your plans, check with the restaurant for its schedule.

Brewing traditions are also part of the region’s character: authentic Upper Palatinate Zoigl beer is brewed in Erlheim. Amberg’s Sudhang private brewery uses hops from Illschwang, the world’s smallest hop-growing area.
