Discover Etzelwang from three different perspectives: the Schmankerlweg trail, archaeological finds documenting settlement since the Stone Age, and the outdoor swimming pool on the Etzelbach. The trail has specific details and named stops; the finds relate to the valleys and hills surrounding the present-day town. At the swimming pool, there is plenty of room for sunbathing on both sides of the stream. These themes offer different ways to shape a stay: exercise, local history or time outdoors.
Hiking the Etzelwanger Schmankerlweg
The 2024 hiking brochure gives the Etzelwanger Schmankerlweg a length of 11.1 kilometres, a walking time of 3.25 hours and a moderate difficulty rating. These three figures offer different points of reference: for the distance, the estimated time and the difficulty classification. Allow extra time for breaks in addition to the stated walking time. The brochure also describes a well-marked hiking route through the hilly landscape of the Upper Palatinate, connecting inns, local delicacies and beer.
The destinations described include a detour to the viewpoint on Neutrasfelsen, an ancient cult site. The Schmankerlweg climbs steeply to Rupprechtstein Castle; from there, you can enjoy views of the Sulzbach Hills. On the way back to Etzelwang, Schloss Neidstein comes into view, set amid a yew forest. When assessing the route for yourself, it is worth considering the moderate rating alongside the explicitly steep climb. This allows you to take the overall distance and a notable stretch into account separately when planning your day.
Stone Age history and time on the Etzelbach
Archaeological finds show that the valleys and hills around present-day Etzelwang have been settled since the Stone Age. This historical perspective focuses on the area surrounding the present-day town. Together with the ancient cult site on Neutrasfelsen, this offers a cultural-history aspect alongside the hiking stops. The finds and the cult site are two distinct points of interest for anyone interested in more than just distance and views.
Etzelwang outdoor swimming pool offers a different focus: there is plenty of room for sunbathing on both sides of the Etzelbach. Alongside hiking and historical attractions, it provides a specific place to take a break outdoors. When planning your stay, you can give these different options the weight that suits your interests, rather than combining them into a single outing.
More to explore in the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination
The wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination offers additional cultural and landscape attractions. The East Bavarian Mining and Industrial Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern researches and documents mining and industry in the eastern Bavarian region, keeping their history alive. The Kirwan festivals are also part of regional tradition: since 2023, they have been recognised as intangible cultural heritage in Bavaria, are celebrated each year in their respective towns, and are open to visitors and locals alike.
For hiking, the Amberg-Sulzbach region features imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and river valleys. The Felsenweg trail leads from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher caves and across an impressive rocky landscape. This hike is 2.7 kilometres long and takes around 45 minutes. It is a separate regional hiking suggestion, with a different time frame from the Etzelwanger Schmankerlweg. On the regional cave hiking trails, entering the caves is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March.
Regional food culture can also play a part in planning your trip: many inns in the Amberg-Sulzbach region regularly invite guests to a traditional Schlachtschüssel feast. Dishes include Wurschtsuppn (sausage soup), Kesselfleisch (boiled pork) and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwursts made to the inns’ own recipes. Dates vary from one inn to another, so check in advance when a meal is being offered.
