Birgland is well suited to a trip where you can choose between plants, forest stations, rocky viewpoints and local traditions. The activities vary in theme and format: one trail is known for rare native plants, another features stations focused on exercise and forest themes; there is also a cycling route and the Kirwan festivals in the local districts. When planning, you can first decide whether to focus on nature, exercise or local culture.

Orchids and Rocks

The Orchid Trail connects Lichtenegg and Wurmrausch and is easy for families to walk. It is known for its abundance of rare native plants, including lady’s slipper, white helleborine, common spotted orchid, fly orchid and bird’s-nest orchid. Flowering depends on the season; if you want to see a particular species, it is best to take account of its seasonal flowering period.

The Türkenfelsen is one of the natural monuments along the Orchid Trail. Its rock towers at the large eastern gateway are climbing crags with difficulty ratings of 4 and 5.

The Forest Adventure Trail

The Forest Adventure Trail is in Schwenderöd, along a section of the Birgland circular hiking trail, and has 15 stations. Eight invite visitors to try out physical skills such as balancing, using dumbbells or climbing. At seven other stations, boards cover forest-related topics and feature the game “I Spy with My Little Eye.” The trail combines exercise with a playful introduction to forest themes, while the Orchid Trail focuses on plants.

Viewpoints and Cycling Route

Bärenfelsen and the Lichtenegg castle ruins lie along the Birgland circular hiking trail; both offer wide views. You can make these two viewpoints a focus of your trip alongside the themed trails. For cycling, Route 1 AS runs from Weigendorf via Fürnried to Frankenhof and back. The route links several places in sequence, while the Forest Adventure Trail and Orchid Trail have different focuses. This makes it easy to choose what to do that day: enjoy the views, go cycling or follow a themed trail.

Kirwan Festivals and Johann Flierl

Kirwan festivals are held every year in the local districts of the municipality of Birgland; specific dates may vary. If these festivals are relevant to your trip, check the dates for your chosen travel period. Another cultural highlight is the permanent exhibition about Johann Flierl on the first floor of the former schoolhouse in Fürnried. Check access arrangements before planning a visit. These offer two different ways to explore local culture: recurring events in the local districts and a themed exhibition in Fürnried.

Amberg-Sulzbach as a Wider Destination

In the wider travel destination of Amberg-Sulzbach, the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern is dedicated to researching and documenting mining and industry in eastern Bavaria and keeping their history alive. For a different activity, try the Bow-Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld: on a circular route of about 3 kilometers through the farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura, you can try traditional archery.
