On the Historic Circular Trail in Kastl, 33 information boards introduce visitors to the history of selected houses and their respective objects. The extended route, marked in yellow, adds another 18 boards, leads to the Monastery Castle and into an outlying area of Kastl, and continues to Pfaffenhofen and Pattershofen. The full route takes about two and a half hours. This makes it possible to choose between a historical circuit in town and a longer route with additional destinations.

Historic Trails and Buildings

The castle complex on Monastery Hill is a sight in the market town of Kastl. The Monastery Castle, with its Romanesque basilica, is also among the sights mentioned in connection with the Schweppermann Cycle Route. Between Kastl and Ursensollen, the cycle route crosses an 18-metre-high viaduct with scenic views. The routes offer different focal points: the Historic Circular Trail explores the history of selected houses and objects, while the section between Kastl and Ursensollen and the viaduct are useful planning reference points for cyclists.

The Lauterach Valley and Juniper Hills

Near Kastl, the Lauterach Valley runs from east to west and has sunny south-facing slopes. The Juniper Hiking Trail passes through fragrant juniper hills, where thyme, pinks, gentians and orchids bloom. Flowering varies by season, making it a seasonal consideration when planning a trip. The origin of the hills is also part of their character: they were formed through grazing by cattle and sheep. This landscape can therefore be appreciated not only for its plants but also for how it came to be.

Stops Between Art and Nature

The art trail station is beside the former railway station. The artwork there tells one part of the history of the Monastery Castle. The “Climbing Eagle Owl” nature experience station has a different focus: it explores how climbers and the creatures that inhabit the cliffs coexist. Kastl thus offers both an artwork with historical connections and a nature-themed attraction.

Outdoor Swimming and Fishing

The heated outdoor swimming pool in Kastl offers relaxation, sports and swimming fun. As a seasonal facility, it may be helpful to check the current opening hours locally before visiting. Fishing on the Lauterach is another seasonal leisure activity in Kastl. Find out about local conditions and permits in advance.

The Wider Destination of Amberg-Sulzbach

Beyond Kastl, the wider destination of Amberg-Sulzbach offers further regional perspectives. The Amberg-Sulzbacher Land is ideal for hiking, with towering limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and picturesque river valleys. One example is the Felsenweg trail from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher: the hike is 2.7 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes. This is considerably shorter than the approximately two and a half hours required for the extended Historic Circular Trail in Kastl. The region’s cultural heritage also includes the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern. It researches and documents the mining and industry of eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive.
