Piauí brings together protected landscapes, archaeological heritage and routes with different focuses. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide which places you want to shape your stay: hikes and rock paintings, geological formations, a historic cityscape, or nature and leisure on the coast. This choice also gives your accommodation search a clear direction.

National parks: rock art, hikes and the Caatinga

In southeastern Piauí, Parque Nacional da Serra da Capivara extends across the municipalities of São Raimundo Nonato, São João do Piauí and Canto do Buriti. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1991 for its historical and cultural value. Possible hikes range across different difficulty levels, from around 20 minutes to four to six hours. These include the Trilha dos Maniçobeiros. When planning how much time to set aside for an outing, you can therefore choose from tours of very different lengths.

In the northeast of the state, Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades lies in the municipalities of Piracuruca and Brasileira; officially, it is located in Piracuruca. As a federal fully protected area, it lies in a transition zone between the Cerrado and the Caatinga. Its natural and archaeological heritage includes unique geological formations and panels of rock paintings. Here, nature and archaeology meet within the same protected area.

Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões is another distinct landscape destination: the protected area lies in the Caatinga biome and covers 823,854.54 hectares. The three national parks thus offer different highlights. Serra da Capivara combines its UNESCO recognition with established hiking opportunities; Sete Cidades brings together geological formations and rock paintings; Serra das Confusões represents a vast protected area in the Caatinga.

Routes with different focuses

The Rota entre Águas e Mistérios focuses on nature, adventure and contemplation, connecting the areas of Sete Cidades, Cânion do Rio Poti and Pedro II. By contrast, the Rota das Emoções focuses on nature tourism and leisure along the coast of the Delta do Rio Parnaíba. It covers approximately 66 kilometers of beaches, mangroves, lagoons and dunes. The comparison brings out the different travel profiles: one route links nature and adventure destinations, while the other turns the focus to coastal landscapes and leisure.

In 2025, the government of Piauí reported that 47.6 kilometers of the access road to Cânion do Rio Poti had been paved in the municipalities of Castelo do Piauí and Buriti dos Montes. The report noted that this had improved safe access to an important ecotourism destination. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current conditions in advance.

Urban history and opal crafts

For visitors looking to include architectural heritage alongside nature, Parnaíba offers a historic and landscape ensemble that Iphan listed for preservation in 2011. It comprises around 830 buildings across five areas: Porto das Barcas, Praça da Graça, Praça Santo Antônio, Estação Ferroviária and Avenida Getúlio Vargas. The number of buildings and the different areas give an idea of the scale of the protected ensemble, whose visit is not limited to a single square.

In Pedro II, the tourism offering highlights handicrafts and jewelry made with local opal. This adds a craft-focused option to the range and clearly distinguishes it from the national parks and coastal landscapes.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation search

When searching for hotels in Piauí, it helps to first decide on your main destination: for example, the hikes and archaeological heritage of Serra da Capivara, the formations of Sete Cidades, the coastal route or Parnaíba’s historic ensemble. This keeps your options focused on the experiences you actually want to plan, rather than combining different regions and themes into a single itinerary.
