In Barras, the river and culture can be viewed as two distinct focal points for a trip: the Rio Longá on one hand, and festivals and theatre work on the other. One distinction is important when planning: swimming conditions can vary by season; festival visits depend on the particular edition.

The Rio Longá and Marataoan

The Rio Longá is considered Barras’s preferred swimming spot. Its water and landscape also make it a natural and tourist attraction, drawing people from Barras and other places. Fishing is also a leisure activity associated with the river. If you plan to swim, check the conditions for your travel dates, as they can vary by season.

The Rio Marataoan offers a historical perspective on leisure by the water. People used to swim at Pesqueiro to cool off in the cold, clear water. The former natural swimming spot was at the exit from Barras in the direction of Teresina, on the right bank of the Rio Marataoan and next to the São Cristóvão neighbourhood. Unlike the Rio Longá as a swimming spot, Pesqueiro is an example of a former use of the river.

Festivals and theatre work

Cia de Teatro Vale do Longá is a non-profit organisation based in Barras and has been recognised as a Ponto de Cultura since 2018. The group’s work, described in 2025, dates back to 2017 and includes theatre, circus and dance, as well as cultural initiatives focused on social inclusion.

The traditional shows of the Festival de Dezembro take place annually during the Festejos de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Barras’s patron saint festival. The cultural programme for the 2024 edition took place at the Espaço Cultural on Avenida Beira Rio; the venue and programme may change from year to year.

The 2025 Festival Junino featured Quadrilha and Bumba-meu-boi performances on Avenida Beira Rio; the festival was organised by the Barras municipal government. Barras Cidade Junina 2026 included Quadrilha performances on Avenida Beira-Rio. A distinction is useful for the calendar: the Festival de Dezembro is linked annually to the patron saint festival; the performances mentioned at Festival Junino and Barras Cidade Junina refer to specific editions in 2025 and 2026.

City history and travel planning

The former Barras Clube building is also part of the city’s history: at the beginning of the 20th century, it was a meeting place for Barras’s social elite. In 2026, Barras took part in an integration meeting of the municipalities of Polo das Águas, a regional tourism partnership.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide on the purpose of your trip first: for a festival, plan your dates around the particular edition and its programme; for a stay by the river, take seasonal swimming conditions into account.
