São João da Serra combines seasonal waterfalls with traditional festivals. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding on your main focus first: the waterfalls form during the rainy seasons, while the cultural highlights are tied to specific festival periods. The waterfalls also vary in location and access conditions; several are on private property. If you are planning an overnight stay, choose your dates around the event you want to attend, and check in advance whether visits are possible at waterfalls on private property or accessible only by certain routes.

Waterfalls: Landscape and Access

Cachoeira da Boa Nova features large rock walls, five waterfalls, and a main waterfall about eight meters high. Cachoeira do Quebra Anzol in São João da Serra was selected, along with eight other geomorphosites, for promotion and publicity.

Cachoeira do Contente is a section of the Rio da Onça and is located on private property in Povoado Contente. Cachoeira do Lau is also on private property, at Fazenda Raimundo Soares in Povoado Caraíba. Cachoeira do Deus Dará is on private property in the Canto do Agreste area of Povoado Lagoa. According to the access conditions described in 2022, there was no path to the private Cachoeira da Boa Vista in Povoado Boa Vista; access was through dense vegetation. The 2022 description of access to the private Cachoeira da Boa Nova noted about two kilometers along an unpaved road, followed by one kilometer on foot along an abandoned path.

The private Cachoeira da Clemência is in the Floresta area. A 2022 field study describes well-maintained paths there, along with good access and visibility. A field inventory also found well-maintained paths at Cachoeira do Cachimbo and no difficulties with access or visibility. Access conditions can change; check in advance whether a visit is currently possible, especially at waterfalls on private property.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Festejos de São João Batista is a traditional annual festival honoring the patron saint of São João da Serra. In the edition described, the festival ran from June 14 to 24. The program included novenas, a horseback procession, a Mass for cattle herders, quadrilhas, and shows; details may vary from year to year. Festival da Cultura is held annually during the week before the town anniversary on December 19 and includes various events. These are two cultural occasions that take place at different times of year, which you can take into account when choosing your travel dates.

The traditional Feira Agro Campo is open to the general public and offers food and handicraft experiences. It adds another occasion to the festival traditions, bringing these themes together.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

São João da Serra is about 129 kilometers from Teresina; the estimated driving time is around two hours and six minutes. Treat this time as a guide and check your specific route before departure. The bridge over the Rio Poti separates São João da Serra from the municipality of Alto Longá and serves as a geographic reference point for finding your way around the area.

For a visit focused on waterfalls, the rainy season is relevant, but the access routes described differ considerably: from paths with good access and visibility to an approach with no path through dense vegetation or longer stretches on foot. For a trip to the festivals, the dates and program are the main considerations.
