Get to know Floriano through its cultural venues and specific events. The public Espaço Cultural Maria Bonita is dedicated to folk culture, music and theatre; the Espaço Cultural Christino Castro combines a century-old mansion with a family collection. Other highlights include the performance history of the Paixão de Cristo, an edition of the arts and crafts event “Artesãos na Praça”, and a tourism perspective on the Estabelecimento Rural São Pedro de Alcântara. This gives you more than one cultural focus to plan your trip around: institutions, collections, performances and artisan collaborations reveal different sides of Floriano.

A cultural centre with local and regional ties

The Espaço Cultural Maria Bonita is a public cultural centre in Floriano dedicated to promoting folk culture, music and theatre. It is located on Avenida Esmaragdo de Freitas in the Beira Rio neighbourhood. The address places the centre in a specific city neighbourhood; at the same time, it is considered a point of reference for artists’ groups in the south of the state of Piauí. These are two different geographical scales: the address identifies its location within Floriano, while its links to artists’ groups extend across southern Piauí. In this way, the venue combines a clearly identified urban location with a regional cultural role.

A mansion, a collection and an amphitheatre

The Espaço Cultural Christino Castro is housed in a century-old mansion in the municipality of Floriano. The Museu Zezé Castro is located in the same cultural space. Its collection of furniture and household items tells the story of the Christino Castro family. This makes the family’s history tangible through specific objects from everyday domestic life. This approach differs from that of the Espaço Cultural Maria Bonita, which focuses on folk culture, music and theatre. The Espaço Cultural Christino Castro also includes the Anfiteatro “Alda Castro”, which seats 100 spectators. Alongside the collection and the building, there is therefore also a performance space with a clearly stated capacity.

Performance history and crafts

In 2025, the Paixão de Cristo marked 30 years of performances in Floriano. The anniversary places the performances in their historical context and differs from the family history told through objects at the Museu Zezé Castro: here, the focus is on the history of a performance over time, while there, it is on a collection relating to a specific family. A report from May 2024 describes the fourth edition of “Artesãos na Praça”. Independent artisans organised it in partnership with the “Coargila” project by artisans from Bairro Curtume. This edition thus highlights a specific collaboration in the crafts alongside the cultural venues and theatre history.

Another tourism perspective

The Estabelecimento Rural São Pedro de Alcântara adds another tourism perspective to Floriano. During a city sightseeing tour in 2023, it was listed among Floriano’s most visited and significant tourist attractions and landmarks. This adds a rural attraction to the cultural centres, family collection and event examples.
