Glod combines a historic wooden church with a distinctive craft tradition and trails through the Slătioara Valley. There are several ways to plan your visit: two hiking trails, each 3.6 kilometres long; a longer hike to Biserica Dracilor and up Măgura Glodului; and a cycling route that leads back to Glod. Textile work and the history of the fulling mills are also part of the village’s cultural identity.

The wooden church of Sfântul Nicolae

The wooden church “Sfântul Nicolae” is listed as a historic monument in the 2010 national register of monuments under registration number MM-II-m-A-04581. Its construction date is given as 1700. It was built by a group of itinerant craftsmen from Moldavia. This structure thus brings together two distinctive aspects: its early date of construction and the origins of the craftsmen who built it.

Valley, river and mountain range

Glod lies in the upper Slătioara Valley, northwest of Măgura Mare in the volcanic Țibleș range. The Slătioara River flows into the Iza between Strâmtura and Bârsana.

A sulphurous, carbonated Borcut with extensive travertine deposits lies southwest of Glod, near the road to Feredeauă. It is another named feature of the surrounding area. Historically, the Glod mineral springs area was associated with sulphurous, saline and carbonated springs, where empirical balneotherapy was once practised.

Trails with different destinations

The two hiking trails, each 3.6 kilometres long, differ in their markings and routes. One, marked with a red dot on a white background, connects Glod, the Slătioara Valley, Izvorul Cald and Borcut. The other is marked with a red cross on a white background and connects Glod and the valley with Șaua Măgura Glodului. Though the routes are the same length, they lead to different named points; choose between them based on the destination and markings, not on a difference in length.

A longer cycling route runs from Glod through the Slătioara Valley, over Șaua Măgura Glodului to Poienile Izei, and back to Glod. It is 11.5 kilometres long. Unlike the hiking trails, the described route includes the return journey to Glod.

The hike from Glod to Biserica Dracilor and up to the summit of Măgura Glodului is listed as approximately 10 kilometres and four to five hours. Allow this amount of time for the hike, and check access and trail conditions locally. The approximate distance and duration provide a planning guideline; they are not an exact time estimate for every visitor.

Textiles and fulling mills

In Glod, people weave țoluri, pănură for winter clothing, and cergi. Cergi and pănură are fulled in fulling mills for between eight and 48 hours. During the process, they shrink by 20 centimetres and become denser. The combination of weaving and subsequent fulling shows how these specific stages of work are part of the production of traditional textiles.

Sheepskin coats with elaborate decoration are also associated with Glod: furriers make them there. Water-powered fulling mills add another historical dimension. In 2017, there were twelve in Glod. Among the mills that were particularly well maintained and in continuous operation at the time were those belonging to the families of Maria Roşca, Măricuţa Dunca, Ileana Vlad and Maria Marchiş. Also in 2017, the mills were used to wash carpets, țoluri and raw wool.

Glod and Maramureș folk song

Glod is the home village of the Petreuș brothers. For more than half a century, they have been regarded as especially valued ambassadors of Maramureș folk song. The village’s cultural connections thus extend beyond its wooden church and textile crafts to include its musical tradition. Together with the range of trails, these offer several distinct themes to guide your exploration of Glod.
