Eight wooden churches, different architectural periods and various regions: the UNESCO ensemble of the wooden churches of Maramureş brings together this diversity under one theme. Anyone interested in architecture and history will find not a single uniform type, but churches representing different periods and areas. There are also museums and memorial sites that offer further perspectives on Maramureş.

Wooden Churches and Historical Testimony

The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța also brings together a specific historical beginning and an extensive ensemble. The first crosses were created in 1935; today, more than 850 stand in the churchyard. The site is also an open-air museum. The number of crosses conveys the scale of the ensemble, while the year it began provides a point of reference in time.

You will encounter a different form of remembrance at the Sighet Memorial. The former prison is now laid out as a museum. Individual cells contain thematic or chronological displays about political repression in the 20th century. Here, the focus is not on church construction or village architecture, but on the history of political repression and how it is understood.

Museums: Architecture, Everyday Life and Collections

The Maramureşean Village Museum “Mihai Dăncuş” is an ensemble of more than 30 monuments of peasant architecture. It was conceived as a village typical of the region: the concept traces the development from a dispersed settlement pattern to a compact village. Architecture and settlement patterns are therefore interconnected; a walk through the ensemble can be seen as an encounter with both themes.

The Ethnographic Museum of Maramureş has extensive collections relating to household life, traditional costumes and folk architecture. These are joined by carpets, textiles, folk masks, and icons on glass, canvas and wood. The Maramureş Museum is housed in a historic listed building constructed in 1730 in the Baroque style. Its themes include the exhibition “Sighetu-Marmației – 680” and a collection on the flora and fauna of Maramureş.

Considered the first museum in Maramureş, the “Dr. Ioan Mihalyi de Apşa” House Museum includes an art gallery. Four rooms display original furniture, a library, and an extensive collection of paintings and documents. This offers a different focus for your visit than the collections on peasant life and regional architecture: here, the rooms and their furniture, books, paintings and documents take centre stage.

Landscape, Nature and Routes

The Munții Maramureșului Nature Park is a protected area. Its aims include conserving the landscape and local traditions, as well as promoting tourism based on these values. Tăul Morărenilor is a distinctive natural area, with terrestrial and aquatic habitats and reproductively isolated plant and animal species. The site is also botanically remarkable: it is the only place in Romania where black alder, green alder and grey alder grow together.

The Mocănița narrow-gauge railway is 56 kilometres long in total. Of this, 43 kilometres run along the Vaser; other sections follow the Novăț and Ștevioara tributaries. These figures describe both the railway’s total length and its route along the named waterways.

Experiences on Foot, by Bike and at the Table

The Drumul Maramureșului offers more than 700 kilometres of nature and cultural experiences to explore on foot or by bike. One designated day section is 24 kilometres long and runs between Poienile de sub Munte and Vișeu de Sus. The total distance and the individual day section provide different points of reference for planning. As published route details and durations can change, check the current route information before setting out on a specific trip.

The Drumul Maramureșului also features a visit experience where you can learn about traditional cuisine and spend a day at Gospodăria – In Tierti. If you would like to include this experience in your travel plans, check in advance whether it is available for your travel dates.

Getting Your Bearings

The Maramureşean Village Museum “Mihai Dăncuş” is on Dealul Dobăieş, about 500 metres from the DN18. The DN18 leads to the valleys of the Iza and Mara. This gives you both the museum’s approximate distance from the road and the road’s connection to those valleys—two specific points that can help you locate the places you discover.
