Romania is defined by striking contrasts: fine sandy beaches, a vast river delta and a rich heritage of churches, villages and fortifications. The Black Sea coast stretches for 45 miles of fine sandy beaches. The Danube Delta is Europe’s largest and best-preserved river delta. More than 300 bird species and 45 freshwater fish species are found there. The Black Sea coastline and the delta’s rich natural environment offer two very different ways to experience the country.

Landscapes and Nature

Large natural areas shape Romania’s landscape well beyond the delta. The Izvoarele Nerei Nature Reserve is one of Europe’s largest primeval forests and covers 5,028 hectares. Semenic-Cheile Caraşului National Park lies in the southwest of the country. Its 36,051.5 hectares encompass especially valuable physical-geographical, floristic, hydrological, geological and speleological features.

The national park has nine tourist routes. When planning your visit, it is worth checking the latest information on route availability. A special case is Peștera Comarnic: it can only be visited with authorized park rangers or licensed guides from the national park administration. Visitors can explore 1,750 metres on the upper, dry level. As visiting regulations may change, check the current conditions in advance.

Churches, Villages and Historic Architecture

In the historic centre of Sighişoara, you’ll encounter a small fortified medieval town founded by Transylvanian Saxons. It preserves an outstanding testament to their culture. The villages with fortified churches in Transylvania reveal a cultural landscape shaped by the Transylvanian Saxons. This includes the farmstead layout, preserved since the late Middle Ages. The fortified churches illustrate architectural styles from the 13th to the 16th century.

Eight churches in northern Moldavia are part of the Churches of Moldavia, considered unique in Europe. Suceviţa is a place of worship within this World Heritage site, in a monastery that remains active. If you plan to visit, check the current worship arrangements in advance. The eight wooden churches of Maramureş stand out for their tall, slender bell towers on the western side. Their architecture combines Orthodox religious traditions with Gothic influences.

The six Dacian Fortresses of the Orăştie Mountains offer a different historical perspective. They comprise extensive, well-preserved remains. The sites reveal an unusual combination of military and religious building techniques and concepts from the Classical world and the late European Iron Age. They offer a glimpse into the interplay of different building and religious traditions.

Experiences and Regional Highlights

Turda Salt Mine is a salt-mining museum in Transylvania. Boat rides are available on the lake in the Terezia Mine: each ride lasts 20 minutes, and each boat holds a maximum of three people. If you plan this short ride, check in advance whether it is being offered, as availability and operating details may change.

In the mountain area of Alba County, the seasonal “Potecu' Stânelor” route connects several sheepfolds in the Sureanu Mountains. Visitors can find natural dairy products, as well as mutton and beef. You can also take part in traditional activities, such as feeding and milking animals and making cheese or Brânză. The Wine Route in Timiș County has a different focus: this wine-growing and gastronomic route offers insight into the county’s culinary and viticultural heritage, bringing together nature, tradition and local products.

For an overview of cultural attractions, the România Atractivă portal brings together 12 cultural routes and 275 tourist destinations, with special events held along the routes. If you want to plan around a particular event, check the date in advance, as the program may change. You can then choose whether to focus on coastal landscapes, natural areas, historic architecture or regional products.
