Strâmtura Commune brings together protected wooden churches, craft traditions and tours with different planning considerations. It is therefore helpful to choose a clear focus for your trip: architectural history, a festival or a specific route. This also makes it easier to base your search for a hotel in Strâmtura Commune on an actual reason for travelling.

Wooden Churches and Crafts

The wooden church „Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil“ in Strâmtura is a protected historic monument. In 1667, it was moved to Strâmtura from the Rozavlea Monastery. It is dated to 1771; dendrochronological analysis has also dated beams to 1654–55. These dates refer to different points in its history: 1667 marks the move, 1771 the dating of the church, and 1654–55 the dating of the beams. Fragments of old royal doors and icons have been preserved in the church. Its paintings are considered exceptionally high-quality, and their colours remain very vivid. The building’s history and its interior furnishings are thus two distinct aspects of the monument.

The wooden church „Sfântul Nicolae“ in Glod is also a protected historic monument. It is dated to around 1784; an LMI entry lists 1700. Glod’s craft tradition includes fulling Cergi and Pănură in water-powered Vâltori. Alongside sacred wooden architecture, a traditional craft technique therefore provides a distinct cultural focus.

Festivals in Glod and Strâmtura

Glod holds an annual folk music festival. The „Zilele comunei Strâmtura“ programme includes traditional music and dances, a parade in folk costumes, and regional foods. The events have different emphases: the festival in Glod focuses on folk music, while the „Zilele“ combine music and dance with a parade and regional foods. If you want to time your trip to coincide with one of the festivals, check the date in advance.

Routes and Route Choices

The Botiza–Poienile Izei–Glod section of the Drumul Maramureșului is 11 kilometres long and is a half-day route. A cycling loop runs from Rozavlea via Șieu, Poienile Izei, Slătioara and Strâmtura, returning to Rozavlea. The route details offer different planning perspectives: for the section, the focus is on its length and half-day duration; the loop can be understood by following its stages and noting its return to Rozavlea.

A turnoff from Slătioara leads to a salt spring and then to the headwaters of Valea Unghiului. The final climb to the saddle between Biserica Dracilor and Măgura Glodului goes either through a gully shaped by a stream, with a gradient of over 45 degrees, or across adjacent steep, slippery grassland. Check trail conditions before setting out; conditions and vegetation can change.
