Teceu Mic brings together specific local history and a river landscape that is also part of a broader regional context. The Tisa and other natural resources shape the local setting; historical forms of the place name and a Greek Catholic chapel add cultural traces. To find your bearings, you can distinguish local connections from the wider river area.

Local History and Religious Connections

Historical records list Teceu Mic in 1828 and 1851 under the name Tétső, and in 1913 as Kistécső. Tétső is therefore associated with two years, while Kistécső appears later. Historians consider it possible that residents of Teceu founded Teceu Mic as early as the 14th century. Specific records of the names from the 19th and early 20th centuries thus contrast with a much earlier, but uncertain, founding date.

The religious history also has two geographical dimensions: Saint Alexie Carpatinul carried out intensive missionary work on the left bank of the Tisa, from Teceul Mic to Valea Vișeului. In the village itself, there is a Greek Catholic chapel built of brick and dedicated to Saint George. The dedication identifies the patron saint to whom a place of worship is devoted; here, it is Saint George. The chapel is a specific religious landmark in the village, while the missionary work extended beyond Teceu Mic.

The Tisa Landscape at Local and Regional Scales

The natural resources of Teceu Mic include the Tisa, arable land, orchards and hay meadows. The river alone does not define the character of the landscape: agricultural features are also part of the local natural setting.

The Tisa Superioară Natura 2000 site extends for 62 km along the Tisa, from Valea Vișeului in the east to Teceul Mic in the west. Along this stretch, the Tisa forms the state border with Ukraine. Teceul Mic is therefore at the western end of a river stretch whose regional reach extends beyond the village.

River Features and Riparian Forests

The landscape of Tisa Superioară includes active and abandoned river channels, ponds formed in abandoned riverbeds, and well-developed riparian forests. The different water features point both to active river channels and to former riverbeds from which ponds formed. Riparian forests are also noted near Teceul Mic. In the Tisa floodplain, Teceu Mic, Piatra, Remeti, Sapanta and Campulung de Tisa are among the areas with numerous habitats that have developed.

This allows you to distinguish between two perspectives when choosing a thematic focus: name forms, the possible founding date and the chapel relate to local history; the river and floodplain landscape is considered across several villages and a longer stretch of river. Their different scopes help distinguish local culture from the regional natural area.

A Time-Specific Note on Fishing

A regulation from 2017 designated a year-round section of the Tisa at Teceul Mic: 300 m downstream and 500 m upstream from border marker No. 258. Both distances are measured along the course of the river from the same border marker. If fishing is relevant to your travel plans, check the current regulations before your visit.
