Ukrainian church and cultural history, along with longer mountain hikes, shape the character of Comuna Remeți as a travel destination. When planning your stay, you can choose between different focuses: historic religious buildings and local traditions, or extensive mountain trails.

Churches and Ukrainian Culture

The old Ukrainian church in Remeți is a former Pauline monastery church dating from the 15th century. It stands on Dubrora Hill, northeast of the village, about 200 metres from the national road. The church has a Rococo-style iconostasis dating from the 18th century.

The new Ukrainian Orthodox parish church is dedicated to All Saints and was built between 1984 and 1986. A team of painters from the Ukrainian region of Zakarpattia decorated it with tempera paintings in 2001–2002. For the Ukrainian community, the Ukrainian church in Remeți brings together prayer in the mother tongue with inherited traditions and customs.

The “Remețeanca” cultural and artistic ensemble consists of pupils from the general school and has been recognised at Ukrainian cultural events. The Remeți choir’s repertoire includes Ukrainian folk songs. For years, the Ukrainian autumn customs and harvest festival “Obiceiuri de toamnă la ucraineni” (“Ziua Recoltei”) has been held in the commune, bringing together artistic groups from Ukrainian communities across Maramureș.

Forest Landscapes and Water

Remeți is part of the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0251 Tisa Superioară and the ROSCI0358 Pricop-Huta-Certeze site. The mountains around Remeți are covered with beech forests; sessile oaks, hornbeams and wild cherries grow on the lower hills. The Remeți watercourse runs through the village of Remeți and flows into the Tisa River. Debra is described as a volcanic neck on the mountain ascent from Remeți.

Hiking and Getting There

The circular hiking trail on Muntele Bradului is 18 to 19 kilometres long and takes about seven and a half hours. The actual duration depends on your pace and conditions. The circular route reaches an elevation of approximately 1,079 metres and can be accessed from Pasul Huta or from Remeți. At around seven and a half hours, it is a full-day activity in its own right; take this into account when planning the length of your stay. Check local road and trail conditions before setting out.

A travel account published in 2021 also describes a mountain hike from Remeți, detailing a sequence of trails through the Bansca Valley, over the Măgura Pass and onward to Piatra cu Iezer. This trail sequence is not an official hiking route.

For access to the area, a route description published in 2014 lists bus or minibus connections on the Baia Mare–Negrești Oaș–Sighetu Marmației route, as well as travel by private car. Since this transport information dates from 2014, check current timetables if you plan to travel by bus or minibus.
