The Vălul Miresei Waterfall is located on the Valea Stanciului in the Răchițele area and cascades down three tiers over a height of about 30 metres. Several hiking trails around Răchițele lead to different scenic spots; caves and churches also offer destinations in their own right. You can tailor your stay in Comuna Mărgău to your hiking plans or cultural interests.

Nature and protected landscapes

Valea Stanciului and the waterfall form a nature reserve of county-level importance. Peștera Vârfurașu, a nature reserve of national importance, is also located in the commune. Specialist equipment or expert accompaniment may be required to access this cave. Piatra Arsă is another nature reserve of county-level importance in the commune. Check the local regulations in force before activities in protected areas.

The Răchițele landscape lies at the foot of the Vlădeasa, between the karst terrain of the Bihor Mountains and the volcanic rocks of the Vlădeasa. In winter, the frozen rock face at Vălul Miresei Waterfall is suitable for ice climbing; conditions and safety requirements may vary.

Compare hiking trails

The easy Circuitul Răchițele loop is 12.5 kilometres long, gains 450 metres in elevation and takes four to five hours. It passes the village’s Orthodox church and reaches Valea Stanciului near the village centre. The moderately difficult Circuitul Pietrelor Albe loop is six kilometres long, with 530 metres of elevation gain; the four-to-five-hour duration refers to the ascent. Note this difference when comparing them: the duration given for the first trail is for the loop, while for the second it is for the ascent.

Another easy option is the out-and-back route from the centre of Răchițele via Vălul Miresei Waterfall to Pietrele Albe, for which five to six hours are allotted. The Doda Pilii–La Cuciulata–Răchițele connecting trail is also easy and six kilometres long; it involves 340 metres of ascent and 260 metres of descent. These figures offer different reference points for distance and elevation profile, but no shared time estimate.

The Circuitul Grotelor covers 1.5 kilometres, with 290 metres of elevation gain, and takes an hour and a half. The trail is classified as difficult; suitable equipment is recommended. It leads to Peștera Șușman, named after the anti-communist resistance leader Teodor Șușman. A viewpoint along the trail offers views of the Lespezi escarpment and Valea Stanciului.

The moderately difficult trail to Vf. Lespezi is 1.5 kilometres long, with 250 metres of ascent and 70 metres of descent. It passes the entrance to Peștera Mică a Lespezilor and then descends to the road in Valea Stanciului. A detour of about 20 metres leads to a viewpoint overlooking Valea Stanciului, Vălul Miresei Waterfall, the Falezele de Granit, Vârful Piatra Arsă and the Vlădeasa ridge. Peștera Mică a Lespezilor is about 100 metres long; its main gallery is easily accessible, and the cave contains a few fossil remains of cave bears.

Churches, collection and event

The historic churches are located in different villages within the commune: the Orthodox church in the village of Mărgău dates from 1506. In Ciuleni, the wooden church “Sfinţii Arhangheli” was built from fir wood in 1707; the wooden church in Răchițele dates from 1911. The ethnographic collection of Răchițele is housed in a room at the village school. Its holdings include festive folk costumes for women and men, textiles displayed on the walls, household items and traditional furniture. If you would like to see the churches or collection inside, check in advance whether visits are possible.

Măsurișul oilor is a local event associated with the month of May. Before you travel, check whether a date falls within your travel period and what programme is planned.
