On the main ridge of the Gilău-Muntele-Mare Massif, the Turbăria de la Căpățâna lies at an altitude of 1,600 metres. This botanically significant nature reserve of national importance has been protected since 1969. Nature conservation, high altitudes and views
Cheile Dumitresei is also among the area’s distinctive landscape features; the gorge is of landscape value at county level in Cluj. Împărăția lui Zamolxe offers a different focus: a 514-hectare zoological nature reserve. Species found there include lynx, wolves, roe deer, otters and capercaillies. Those interested in viewpoints can enjoy views of the villages of Măguri and Mărișel from the Țâcla Gabrii rock. Hiking trail and route planning
The Măguri-Răcătău–Vârful Dumitreasa–La Potcoavă hiking trail is accessible by car as far as Șaua Dobrin. After weather events, it is advisable to check access before setting out. The accessibility information applies up to this point; it does not describe the entire hiking route as a car journey.
Another tour option is the Valea Ierii–Dobrin–Măguri-Răcătău route. It is 28 kilometres long and takes approximately an hour and a half without stops. Suitable modes of transport listed are four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles, quad bikes and bicycles. The two planning questions are therefore different: for the hiking trail, it is about access as far as Șaua Dobrin; for this route, it is about its length, approximate duration and the types of transport intended for it.

Museum, crafts and tradition
The “Căsuța Bunicii” Museum displays plates, cloths, headscarves, folk costumes, woven bags and traditional weaving tools. The objects were moved from their original, hard-to-reach location to a room in the centre of Răcătău village. The collection and its location give a visit a distinct cultural focus alongside the municipality’s landscapes and trails.
The history of craftsmanship includes Simion Drînda from Măguri: he practised the blacksmith’s craft throughout his life and opened his own forge in 1975. In 2023, the Romanian Ministry of Culture declared him a “Living Human Treasure”. These two dates mark different aspects of his work: the opening of the forge and the later cultural recognition.
A traditional gathering is held every year on Muntele Dobrin around the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. At the gathering on 29 June 2023, the programme began with a liturgy in the wooden church, followed by a folk concert. The programme for that date describes this specific sequence of events, while the gathering itself is described as an annual event.
