A fragment of a 15th-century baptistery marks the site of a medieval Hungarian church on a hill in Gârbău. This tangible indication of the area’s older history sits alongside wooden churches, a 16th-century church ensemble and a cycling route through several villages. When choosing the focus of your trip, you can consider architectural history, archaeology and cycling separately or give them different weight.
Churches and the area’s older history
The Orthodox wooden church of “Sf. Arhangheli” in Gârbău was built around 1700 in Gârboel, the settlement’s former location. It is classified as a historic monument and is no longer used for religious services. Its history therefore differs from that of the medieval church site marked by the baptistery fragment on the hill.
In Turea, distinctive details can be found in the wooden church’s construction. Its walls are made of hewn oak beams. The roof is covered with oak shingles, made with a drawknife and joined using tongue-and-groove joints. Those interested in construction methods can look at the wall material and roof workmanship as two specific examples of craftsmanship.
The protected Reformed church ensemble in Viștea dates from the 16th century. The church was initially Catholic and later became Reformed. It includes a massive bell tower with a visible timber structure. Viștea also has a historical and ethnographic museum. The archaeological settlement at Dealul Babii spans the period from the Eneolithic through the Bronze Age to the Roman era.
Cycling route and practical choices
A 63-kilometre cycling route passes through Turea, Gârbău and Nădășelu. It runs northwest of Cluj-Napoca across a series of ridges and valleys and is considered particularly interesting from a cultural perspective. The route is described as moderately difficult and runs mainly along paved or unpaved tracks intended for horse-drawn vehicles. Difficulty and trail conditions may change seasonally. Check conditions before setting out and choose the route according to the time available and how much cycling you want to do.
In Cornești, the wooden church is one of the tourist attractions in Gârbău Commune. The Orthodox church in Cornești is associated with accommodation for pilgrims. Confirm current availability before your trip. Also in Cornești, the NarCheese cheese workshop offers artisan cheeses made from 100% organic milk using Swiss recipes adapted to the region.
Lészay Manor is a ruined building: doors and windows are missing, and beams are damaged and hanging down. Check its condition before visiting. Historically, “Fiii satului Gârbău” was scheduled for late June and “Balul strugurilor” in Turea for 5 October. Before your trip, check whether a current edition is taking place and whether it is open to visitors.
