Sernancelhe lies between the Serra da Lapa and Serra da Zebreira mountain ranges and beside the Távora River. Historic buildings, an annual celebration, regional cuisine and water sports offer a variety of experiences. Visitors planning a stay can choose from cultural history, activities on the water and culinary discoveries.

Architectural history with distinctive dates

The Pelourinho de Sernancelhe is a monument in the Manueline style and bears the date 1554. It is classified as an IIP (ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico), meaning a property of public interest. The style and date provide two specific points of reference for understanding its history and architecture.

The Solar dos Carvalhos was built in the second half of the 18th century by Manuel António Correia de Carvalho and was classified as a property of public interest in 2016. Its private chapel contains a gilded wooden altarpiece. The construction date, later classification and detail from the private chapel each tell a different aspect of the building’s history.

Santuário da Senhora da Lapa: Architecture and Festival

The Santuário da Senhora da Lapa was completed in 1635 and features Baroque and Philippine architectural influences. Inside, visitors can admire the altars of the Crucifixion and the Death of Saint Joseph. The architecture and altars offer different perspectives on the sanctuary: the building’s influences and the religious depictions in its interior.

The Senhora da Lapa festival takes place every year on 15 August and continues to attract thousands of pilgrims. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the latest festival information in advance. This will help you plan your visit around the holiday rather than treating it as just another date on a sightseeing list.

Water Sports and the Ecovia in Vila da Ponte

Praia Fluvial de Vila da Ponte is part of the Albufeira do Vilar and the Centro de Desportos Náuticos de Vila da Ponte. Motorised and non-motorised watercraft are permitted on the water, except for motorboats such as jet skis. Permitted activities include pedal boats (gaivotas), canoes, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Designated areas must be observed.

The 3 km-long Ecovia offers another way to experience the surrounding area. It runs between Caminho da Cheira and the footbridge over Ribeira de Ferreirim, passing through the built-up area of Vila da Ponte. This gives visitors two clearly distinct options when planning: activities on the water in designated areas, and a route whose length, course and passage through the built-up area are specified.

Chestnut landscapes and regional cuisine

Sweet chestnut trees have shaped the landscape of Sernancelhe’s villages and hillsides for centuries. Chestnuts also feature in the local cuisine: in Sernancelhe, they are boiled, roasted, made into pudding or prepared as preserves. These different preparations give chestnuts more than one place in the local cuisine.

Other regional culinary specialities include Torresmos, carne estremeada, fried pork steaks and fried liver with boiled potatoes. This makes it possible to distinguish the chestnut tradition specifically associated with Sernancelhe from the meat dishes attributed more broadly to the region, without combining them into a single local culinary tradition.
