An old locomotive at the former Estação de Torredeita, 686 steps to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, and art collections ranging from Ancient Egypt to Picasso show the breadth of discoveries in Viseu. You can shape your stay around urban art and architectural history, routes through landscapes, or regional crafts.
Art and architectural history in Viseu
Painting is the focus at the Museu Nacional GrĂŁo Vasco: its main collection includes paintings by Vasco Fernandes, known as GrĂŁo Vasco, and his principal collaborator, Gaspar Vaz. The museum was founded in 1915 by Francisco de Almeida Moreira. The SĂ© Catedral de Viseu took shape in the 12th century and was extensively renovated in the 13th century under D. Dinis. The Tesouro-Museu da Catedral preserves two 13th-century reliquaries from the Limoges school, as well as a monstrance belonging to D. Miguel da Silva.
The Museu do Caramulo offers a different breadth of collections: its 100 vehicles include cars, motorcycles and bicycles. The museum also displays art ranging from Ancient Egypt to Picasso, including 16th-century tapestries from Tournai and works by DalĂ, Picasso and Vieira da Silva. By contrast, the Museu do Quartzo on Monte de Santa Luzia has a very tightly defined focus: it is the world’s first museum devoted exclusively to a single mineral.
The history of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios can also be read in its architecture. A Baroque staircase with 686 steps leads to the Rococo sanctuary, built in the 18th century. The Funicular de Viseu connects Rua da Cava do Viriato with Adro da Sé; check the latest service information before travelling.
Routes through varied landscapes
The Ecopista do Dão follows the Dão and Pavia rivers through landscapes of oaks, chestnut trees, cork oaks, vineyards and cultivated fields. Along the way, views open up over the Serra do Caramulo and the Serra da Estrela. The route also passes the former Estação de Torredeita, where an old locomotive stands. Here, the landscape and railway heritage are two distinct sides of the same route.
The Rota do Quartzo reaches a monumental quartz monolith on Monte de Santa Luzia; the Museu do Quartzo is on the same mountain. The Percurso de Santar runs through the vineyards of Dão de Santar and along an old road of Roman origin. The Paço dos Cunhas is also associated with Santar: it was built in 1609 at the behest of D. Pedro da Cunha and incorporated some pre-existing structures from a medieval Paço. The Lago e Cascata da Cavaca is a good place to take a break on the Percurso Caldas da Cavaca.
The Rota de Megalitismo is a 500-kilometre circular route that passes, among other places, through the Concelho Viseu and provides access to 28 megalithic monuments. The Caminho PortuguĂŞs Interior de Santiago runs for about 40 kilometres through the municipality of Viseu. These figures refer to different scales: 500 kilometres describes the circular route, while about 40 kilometres is the section through the municipality. Check the Caminho route details again before planning.
Thermal baths, leisure and crafts
Remains of a Roman bathhouse show that the Termas de SĂŁo Pedro do Sul were used during the Romanisation period. Leisure activities there include tennis, horse riding, boat hire, swimming pools, canoeing, clay pigeon shooting and roller skating. As individual activities may change, it is advisable to confirm them before your trip.
The black pottery tradition of Molelos in the Concelho Tondela has been recognised as intangible cultural heritage by the Portuguese government. Soenga is a communal ritual of firing pottery outdoors and is part of Molelos’ ceramic tradition. At Parque do Fontelo, natural and cultural heritage come together in a recreational space. Facilities there include swimming pools, a campsite, tennis and football courts, a sports hall complex and a fitness trail; check the status of individual facilities before your visit.
Planning your trip
Regular bus services connect cities, towns and the main settlements of the Viseu Dão Lafões region. As routes and timetables may change, it is worth checking your specific connection before travelling. When choosing a hotel, you can compare the focus of your stay: collections and architectural history, a particular route, or thermal-bath and craft traditions. This lets you tailor your search to the experiences you actually plan to include.
