The Vale do Bestança gives Cinfães a distinctive landscape feature: the valley stretches for about 15 kilometres in a southeast–northwest direction and lies entirely within the municipality. It is part of the Natura 2000 network; more than 800 species of vascular plants occur in its catchment area. Nature enthusiasts will find a clear focus here, complemented by viewpoints, trails and other protected areas in the municipality.
Landscape between the valley and protected areas
The municipality of Cinfães also includes the Natura 2000 protected areas SIC PTCON0025 Serra de Montemuro and SIC PTCON0059 Rio Paiva. The Serra de Montemuro area was approved by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 142/97 of 28 August, and the Rio Paiva area by Resolution No. 76/2000 of 5 July. These protected areas and the Vale do Bestança offer different perspectives on the region’s natural environment.
The Miradouro de Teixeirô is in the parish of Cinfães; from there, the view reaches the mouth of the Bestança River and the Douro. The Observatório da Natureza de Marcelim is located in Marcelim, in the municipality of Cinfães and in the Serra do Montemuro. Check access conditions before planning your visit. By the Rio Paiva, the Parque Botânico e Fluvial Temático combines the visitor experience, environmental education and the protection of biodiversity.
Trails with different routes
The PR 1 CNF – Caminho do Prado is a 6.7-kilometre loop that starts and ends in Vila de Muros, in Tendais. The PR 2 CNF – Rota do Vale follows a different format: this linear trail runs from Vila de Muros to the Portas do Montemuro. It passes through the Vale de Bestança along the Bestança River. This gives you two clearly distinct options: a loop with the same start and end point, and a linear route with different endpoints.
The PR 6 CNF – Caminho da Vila is also linear. It runs from the tourist office in Cinfães to the Vale de Bestança Interpretation Centre. Another trail is the GR60 – Grande Rota das Montanhas Mágicas: in Cinfães, it runs from Escamarão on the Douro to the traditional village of Gralheira in the Serra do Montemuro. The named endpoints help you compare the routes by their layout, without assuming a walking time or a particular level of difficulty.
For cycling, the Centro de BTT Montemuro 41 loop is a separate option: it is 9.7 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Centro de BTT da Gralheira. When comparing options, you can therefore focus primarily on each trail’s format and its stated start and end points. Distances are given for the Caminho do Prado and the BTT loop; for the other trails mentioned here, the focus is on their routes and endpoints.
Churches, architecture and local culture
The Igreja de São João Baptista de Cinfães dates from the 18th century. Two granite sarcophagi can be seen in its side chapel. The Igreja de São Cristóvão de Nogueira belongs to the late style of so-called Resistance Romanesque. Visits booked through the Rota do Românico booking form must be requested at least 24 hours in advance, or 48 hours in advance for Sunday visits. Check these requirements again before your visit.
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Natividade de Escamarão follows the architectural forms of so-called rural Gothic and has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público since 1950. The Igreja de Santa Maria Maior de Tarouquela is the surviving part of a Benedictine convent that existed until the 16th century. These buildings offer different ways to explore architecture and history in Cinfães.
Serpa Pinto Discoveries comprises an interactive museum dedicated to the life of Serpa Pinto, as well as an interpretation area covering traditional arts and crafts, ethnography and folklore. The Centro Interpretativo da Gralheira also serves as a museum and hosts activities related to maize cultivation. Check the visitor arrangements in advance. Cinfães’ culinary traditions include Arouquesa beef, butter biscuits known as Matulos, and preserves. These add further themes to the landscape and architectural history that can shape a trip through the region.
