At Penedo de Lamas, an inscription comprises eleven lines and contains letter ligatures, known as nexuses, typical of Roman inscriptions. A. Tovar and M. Lourdes Albertos considered it a votive offering dedicated to several local deities. The lettering features relate to the form of the text; the interpretation adds a possible religious significance.

History across different timescales

The fortified settlement of São Lourenço was built in the Iron Age and continued to exist during Roman times. The Igreja Paroquial de Moledo was built in its entirety at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The comparison sets a settlement that spanned two eras against a later, clearly defined period of construction.

As archaeological remains, the Castros de Maga attest to Moledo’s origins during the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. In contrast to this connection with Moledo’s origins, São Lourenço is notable for its continuity from the Iron Age through to Roman times. These are two distinct historical points of emphasis.

A mill once used for oil production

The Azenha de Moledo is now in ruins. It belonged to the Marques family, who lived in the village of Moledo; olive oil was produced at the mill. Its current ruined state and its former oil production describe different aspects of the same building: its present condition and its former function. The family connection adds a specific link to the village.

Valley, mountains and routes

Moledo lies in a valley between Serra de São Lourenço and Serra de São Salvador. Cascata do Inferno is located in the village of Inferno. These are two distinct geographical reference points: the valley’s position between mountain ranges and the waterfall’s location in the village of Inferno.

Serra de São Lourenço also features in route directions: the GR52, Grande Rota da Transumância, climbs to its summit and offers views in every direction. The PR9, Trilho da Azenha, starts next to the Igreja Paroquial de Moledo. The GR52 starts in the village of Casais do Monte, in the Freguesia de Moledo. The routes therefore differ right from the starting point: the PR9 begins at the parish church, while the GR52 begins in Casais do Monte; the climb to the summit and the panoramic views add further details about the second route.
