The granting of Magdeburg rights in 1354 marks the starting point for the historical journey that the Muzeum Historii Miasta Rzeszowa traces through to the Second World War. There are also museums covering regional, technical and popular culture, as well as buildings with very different connections to the city’s history. This lets you explore Rzeszów through the subjects that interest you most.
Museums: City History, Regional Ways of Life and Collections
The Muzeum Historii Miasta Rzeszowa focuses on the city’s history spanning several centuries. The Muzeum Etnograficzne offers a different perspective: it is devoted to the lives of former residents of villages in the Carpathian Foothills, including the Rzeszowiacy, Lasowiacy and Pogórzanie. If you are interested in regional ways of life, this museum offers a thematic counterpoint to the city’s history.
The Muzeum Dobranocek displays original puppets from animated films, along with various objects featuring popular characters from evening cartoons. Its focus is on characters and objects; the collection complements the historical themes with an insight into popular culture.
The Muzeum Techniki i Militariów offers a different kind of collection: its holdings include 32 MZ vehicles and historic cars made in Poland and France in the 1950s. These include the Warszawa, Syrena and Citroen. Unlike the city and ethnographic museums, which explore historical ways of life, this museum focuses on specific vehicle types and where they come from.
Architecture and Religious Heritage
The parish church of Saints Adalbert and Stanislaus dates from the 15th century. The Bernardine monastery is a pilgrimage site associated with devotion to the Virgin Mary of Rzeszów: the limewood figure is considered miraculous and attributed to the Kraków school of Wit Stwosz.
The history of the Piarists also shapes the architectural heritage. Since 1954, the Muzeum Okręgowe has been housed in a former Piarist monastery building erected in the mid-17th century. The former Piarist monastery in Rzeszów is also a nationally rare architectural and urban ensemble in Neoclassical-Baroque forms. The Lubomirski Summer Palace offers a different accent: it is a late Baroque palace and a work by Tylman van Gameren. Together, these examples range from Neoclassical-Baroque forms to a late Baroque palace.
More Experiences and Seasonal Options
At the “Marysieńka” shelter, visitors can tour several underground rooms of the nuclear bunker and see original equipment and military gear from the Cold War era. This offers another way to explore history, this time through a preserved shelter and its fittings.
In addition to theatre performances, the Teatr im. Wandy Siemaszkowej organizes the nationwide theatre festivals Rzeszowskie Spotkania Teatralne and Rzeszowskie Spotkania Karnawałowe, as well as the internationally oriented Biennale Plakatu Teatralnego competition. Event dates may vary, so check specific dates before your trip.
For a seasonal change of pace with an outdoor activity, the municipal Żwirownia outdoor swimming pool has a sandy beach and a designated shallow-water area for small children. Check current conditions before swimming. The cultural attractions and outdoor pool therefore differ not only in subject, but also in whether you want to plan a museum visit, a performance or a seasonal leisure activity.
