Nine sections, a total length of 1,202 kilometres and 127 wooden historic buildings: the Wooden Architecture Route gives Podkarpackie a broad cultural framework. It leads to buildings in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and offers a clear thread to follow if you want to get to know the region’s architectural heritage. With several sections and numerous destinations, wooden architecture here is a subject that extends beyond a single building.

Landscape, protected areas and starry skies

The Podkarpackie Voivodeship lies across three physiographic provinces: the Western Carpathians, including the Podkarpacie foothills, the Eastern Carpathians and the Polish Uplands. A prominent high point is Tarnica in the Bieszczady Mountains: at 1,346 metres, it is the highest point in the voivodeship. Protected areas cover almost 50 percent of its area. Bieszczady National Park protects the highest-elevation areas in the Polish part of the Eastern Carpathians.

Nature trails can be found in the national park near Bukowe Berdo, Połonina Caryńska and Połonina Wetlińska. Another nature-related experience is offered by the “Bieszczady” Starry Sky Park, located in the International Biosphere Reserve of the Eastern Carpathians. Astronomical presentations and various workshops on the subject are held there. Dates and booking arrangements vary by season; check the latest information before planning your visit.

Cycling with different areas of focus

The eastern Green Velo cycling route runs for more than 400 kilometres through the region. Challenging cycling routes can also be found in the Bieszczady Mountains, the Low Beskid and the Słonne Mountains. This offers different cycling options: a long regional route on the one hand, and challenging trails in three mountain areas on the other. Which one matters for your trip planning depends on whether you want to focus on the length of the Green Velo route or on the mountain areas mentioned.

Architectural heritage, industrial history and railways

Industrial history also has its own places to explore. The Podkarpackie Museum in Krosno has Europe’s largest collection of oil lamps. The Central Industrial Region Route leads to industrial heritage sites, former factories, museums, and workers’ and engineers’ housing estates in Podkarpackie. Its walking routes and attractions include destinations in Rzeszów, Nowa Sarzyna, Stalowa Wola, Nowa Dęba, Skopanie, Mielec, Pustków, Pustynia, Dębica and Sędziszów Małopolski.

Rail enthusiasts have two different options to explore. The Przeworsk Narrow-Gauge Railway line is 46 kilometres long and includes a 602-metre narrow-gauge railway tunnel. The railway operates from May to September; check the timetable before travelling. The Bieszczady Forest Railway takes travellers to the mountain landscapes in the south of Podkarpackie.

Tastings and finding a place to stay

At the Carpathian Wine Salon, you can attend guided tastings of wines from various Carpathian regions, including wines from Podkarpackie. As tasting arrangements may change, check the current options in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Podkarpackie, it can help to have a clear focus for your trip. This lets you decide for yourself which themes shape your journey, rather than following a set programme.
