Waterfalls, reddish granite formations and pilgrimage processions give Chacabuco Department a range of attractions. Cortaderas is home to a nature reserve and several named waterfalls; Papagayos combines Caranday palms with festival traditions. Hiking trails, viewpoints and historic sites add to the options in other municipalities.

Waterfalls and scenery in Cortaderas

The Quebrada de Villa Elena Nature Reserve follows the Arroyo Cortaderas through reddish granite formations. Its mountain ecosystem offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography and nature tourism. The reserve is home to Chorro Grande, also known as Cascada de los CĂłndores: the waterfall is more than 50 metres high.

Cortaderas is also home to Cascada Esmeralda, which is also called Chorro Chico. Its drop is about nine metres high. Access is via an approximately 90-minute walk of low to moderate difficulty along the Arroyo Cortaderas or Villa Elena. Trail conditions may vary seasonally; check them before setting out. The two waterfalls differ in that Chorro Grande is notable for its height of more than 50 metres, while Cascada Esmeralda is described in terms of its specific route.

Hiking trails, peaks and viewpoints

Guides and baqueanos offer trekking tours through ravines and to springs in the Comechingones for the climb to the 1,793-metre summit of Cerro Negro. If you are considering this tour, confirm the guiding arrangements locally before setting out.

The 2.4-kilometre Camino Pintoresco Pedemonte in Villa del Carmen leads to the foothills of the Sierra de los Comechingones. From there, you can enjoy views of the mountain forest and its rich variety of birdlife. Trail conditions may vary; plan your visit accordingly.

Piedra de Luz in Villa Larca offers a different perspective on the landscape: the rock formation appears to balance on the mountainside. A circular walk from Establecimiento Piedra de Luz leads to viewpoints overlooking the Quebrada del Tala and the wide Valle de Concarán.

Pilgrimage festivals and local culture

In Papagayos, the Festival de la Palmera Caranday brings together gaucho traditions, criollo displays of skill, music and culture. The February 2026 edition was the festival’s 25th. The Caranday palm groves are also a local attraction. Several families make handicrafts from palm leaves, including hats, dolls and table decorations.

In Renca, the annual celebration in honour of Cristo de Renca takes place on 3 May. A procession accompanied by music and dancing winds through the streets, drawing thousands of pilgrims. Check the arrangements for the relevant date before travelling. Direct stamping at the Casa de los Gobernadores is available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; check these hours before your visit as well.

Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen is considered Villa del Carmen’s most important historical and cultural heritage site. According to historian Juan W. Gez, the town was founded in 1873 around the former site of the chapel. Another trace of the past can be found at Cueva del Indio in Villa Larca: the natural cavity in a large rock contains human remains believed to belong to a member of an Indigenous community from the Comechingones area.

The waterfall can be reached via Provincial Route No. 1. From Villa Larca, travel three kilometres south; at the end of the paved road, continue on foot for about 500 metres towards the Sierras. Check local conditions before driving.

Dique Boca del Rio offers opportunities for water sports and walks. The access road is paved, signposted and lit; as conditions can change, it is advisable to check for updates before driving.
