A guided excursion leads 300 to 400 meters into the old ore tunnel of Mina Esperanza. Visitors walk through the tunnels and see stalactites and geological formations. Mining can also be found in Coronel Pringles Department at the Río Amarillo, in a mineral collection and in connection with green-veined onyx.

Mining underground and along the river

The tour to Mina Esperanza focuses on the tunnels and the old ore tunnel. As the schedule may change, check it before your visit. At the Río Amarillo, you can search for gold by hand under the guidance of local residents. Check whether this activity is available before your trip.

Another discovery related to onyx leads to Cantera Santa Isabel near Cerro Tiporco. It is cited as the source of the green-veined stone used to make jewelry, sculptures and decorative objects. At the Fiesta del Mármol Ónix in January, craftspeople present such works. The Fiesta de Los Ríos has a different focus: the community of El Trapiche has held it every summer since 1984; it is a provincial event. Check the current dates and program before planning your visit around it.

Routes between streams and mountain views

Virorco combines cycling with a distinctive landscape: the mountain stream carries clear water and is home to rainbow trout. There are mountain biking and cycling routes, including the 6.36-kilometer Virorco–Las Pircas circuit, with 170 meters of elevation gain.

The options described for walking also take you through a variety of landscapes. The Caminito de la Zorra follows the river and offers views of the mountain landscape. The ascent of Cerro Tomolasta is considered easy to moderately difficult and offers panoramic views of the natural surroundings. The specific differences can help you compare the options: the circuit has a stated distance and elevation gain, while Cerro Tomolasta is described in terms of difficulty and views. These are different ways to assess an excursion.

Minerals, a cave and architectural history

The Museo Parador Minero displays a collection of more than 650 minerals. These include rock crystal, onyx, amethyst, lapis lazuli, quartz and malachite; one rock crystal weighs 35 kilograms. Exhibits may change. If you want to see a particular specimen, ask about the current exhibition in advance.

El Castillo tells a different story: the former main building of an estancia was built by Bett in 1850 and has Spanish influences. Its appearance is reminiscent of a medieval fortress; a turret and ruins are also part of the site. In the Templo Santo Domingo, the onyx marble altar stands out as a specific feature of its architecture.

The Gruta de Inti Huasi is about 8,000 years old, associated with the Ayampitin culture and recognized as part of San Luis’s historical and cultural heritage. The Museo de la Poesía collects the works of Juan Crisóstomo Lafinur. Together, these places show that cultural interest in the department is not limited to mining and minerals.

Water and practical information

The La Florida tourist, recreation and camping complex has the Chica and Grande beaches, with lifeguards and buoy-marked boundaries, as well as a launch point for boats and kayaks. As operations may change, check the current services and access before your visit. On the Río Rosario, the municipal Balneario Monitor Fernández is a natural recreation area with fishing spots for small fish species.

For road navigation, two details are useful; they should not be combined into a single route: the gold mine in La Carolina can be reached via Provincial Route 9. A regional circuit runs from El Trapiche via Provincial Route 9 and Provincial Route 39 to Embalse La Florida. Road conditions and signage may change; check them before setting off.

Also explore: Trapiche, La Bajada, La Carolina, El Amparo, La Capital Department, Ayacucho Department, Chacabuco Department, Belgrano Department.
