Fehraltorf is a political municipality in the Pfäffikon district of the Zurich Oberland in the canton of Zurich. The “Ziit-Spuure” Culture Trail, archaeological sites and Lake Pfäffikon, part of which lies within Fehraltorf’s municipal area, offer different perspectives on the town. The history of the village and its archaeological finds sit alongside a landscape shaped by glaciers. The aspect that interests you most may also influence your choice of accommodation.

Village history on the “Ziit-Spuure” Culture Trail

The Culture Trail presents historical information at 53 locations spread throughout the village. One clearly defined way to explore it is the “Village Centre” route, which is about 1,500 metres long. Stop 39 is the “Roman estate in Speck”. The trail thus leads from information at various places in the village to a specifically identified archaeological point of interest.

When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing the specific route from the broader Culture Trail: the figure of 53 locations applies to the whole village, while the length of about 1,500 metres refers to the “Village Centre” route. If you want historical information and a walk to be central to your stay, “Ziit-Spuure” offers a local point of reference. The Roman estate stop is one specifically identified stop, not a description of the entire route.

Archaeological traces from different periods

The finds in Fehraltorf span different periods. In the Burgwis-Sackholz area, southwest of the hillfort at Rüti, which is surrounded by three oval ramparts, settlement remains dating to the Late Bronze Age were found. The hillfort can be climbed from the side of the pistol range; check local conditions before your visit.

Another history of archaeological finds concerns Lochweid: between 1887 and 1897, at least three burial mounds were excavated or removed in a wooded area. Several richly furnished cremation and inhumation graves were uncovered. Another historical reference dates to the 530s, when Fehraltorf became part of the Merovingian Kingdom along with northern Switzerland. Grave goods from 57 graves excavated in 2015 bear witness to this. These dates place the topics in chronological context without combining them into a single site or route.

Drumlin landscape and village character

Lake Pfäffikon lies partly within the municipality of Fehraltorf and is part of the drumlin landscape created by the Linth-Rhine glacier in the Zurich Oberland. Two different perspectives thus meet here: the history of human settlement and a glacially shaped landscape.

Another local image is the horse statue in front of an abstract depiction of a drumlin. It stands at a traffic roundabout at the entrance to the village, on Kempttalstrasse near the turnoff to Russikon. The statue symbolises Fehraltorf’s connection with agriculture, equestrian sport and glacial landscape formation. Together with the reference to drumlins at Lake Pfäffikon, it shows how the landscape and local themes are reflected in different forms.

Rail and airfield: check conditions in advance

Fehraltorf has been connected to the Swiss railway network via Fehraltorf station since 3 May 1876, when the Effretikon–Hinwil railway line opened. For current travel planning, however, this needs to be distinguished from the station’s present-day services: S-Bahn line S3 serves the station, S19 runs at peak times and SN8 operates in the ZVV night network at weekends. Check the timetable before travelling if you are planning your arrival or departure around these services.

Speck-Fehraltorf airfield lies between Fehraltorf and Lake Pfäffikon and is operated by the Zürcher Oberland Flight Group (FGZO). The operator recommends the airfield as a place to visit; private passenger flights are also offered. If you are planning a visit or a flight, check the operating conditions and availability for your chosen date in advance. This keeps the distinction clear between what is offered locally and the arrangements for a specific visit.

Choose your stay according to your interests

When choosing a hotel in Fehraltorf, you could first consider which aspect of the town you want to shape your stay: the Culture Trail and its historical information, the different archaeological topics, the landscape around Lake Pfäffikon or the airfield. For train travel, a visit to the hillfort or a visit to the airfield, it is important to check the relevant current conditions.
