Bauma offers several ways to enjoy culture and outdoor activities during your stay: visible remnants of the walls at Altlandenberg Castle Ruins, a residential museum in the Freddihaus, traditional hand weaving, hiking trails and a ride on a steam train. Highlights range from architectural history and everyday culture to industrial history and outdoor activities. When planning, it is worth checking the visiting conditions and time information for each attraction.

Castle Ruins and Residential Museum

At Altlandenberg Castle Ruins, remnants of the palas, curtain wall and several gate structures are visible. The palas, curtain wall and gates show different parts of the castle complex. From the village centre, the route to the ruins passes through the railway underpass; after crossing the Töss, the hiking trail up to the castle begins on the opposite bank. Signposts at the station point the way. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Freddihaus offers a different focus: it is a largely preserved 16th-century Bohlenständer-Flarzhaus, a traditional timber house. Today it serves as a residential museum and is furnished with original items belonging to Rosa Freddi. Visits are possible for small groups by prior arrangement. Make sure to book in advance.

Hand Weaving and Industrial History

The Heimatwerk Züri Oberland hand-weaving workshop preserves a craft typical of the Oberland and the Töss Valley. It operates one of the last professional hand-weaving workshops in Switzerland and is committed to preserving the craft. Visitors can watch the weavers at work; check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Zürcher Oberland Industrial Heritage Trail is a hiking route approximately 30 kilometres long. It connects 50 sites of technical and industrial-historical interest, from Lake Greifensee to the Töss Valley. Information boards at each site provide key details. Guided tours on individual sections and at selected sites explain technical details and offer insights into the living habits and economic circumstances of the population at the time. As well as hiking, the trail provides a historical perspective on technology and work.

Hiking Trails by Duration and Difficulty

The seven Guyer-Zeller hiking trails were laid out around Bauma by railway pioneer Adolf Guyer-Zeller. Hikes take between 50 minutes and three hours and lead across bridges and steps, through deep ravines and up to forested peaks. The time range helps you plan how much hiking to do, while the trail descriptions give you an idea of the terrain.

The Nordic walking trails of the Gesundheitsparcours also vary in length and difficulty. The Guyer-Zeller trails provide specific walking times, while the Nordic walking trails vary in length and difficulty. These details offer different points of reference when choosing a route.

Steam Train and Planning Your Stay

The steam train journey passes streams, ponds and historic industrial sites. You can travel from Bauma to Hinwil. Various steam railway stations are suitable as starting points or destinations for hikes. If you are planning a journey, check the operating days in advance.

The hiking times help you estimate the scope of your planned itinerary.
