In the middle of Rečica ob Savinji’s market square stands a stone pillory: about two metres high, with a distinctive cap and an iron ring. It is one of twelve surviving pillories in Slovenia. This striking structure offers a tangible starting point for exploring the town’s history; other traces of its cultural heritage range from a Renaissance building to a church with a long history.

Buildings and historical milestones

Tavčarjev dvor is a single-storey stone building from the 16th century, built in the Renaissance style. In German documents, it is called Tautscher Hof. Both names refer to the same building.

The parish of Rečica ob Savinji is dedicated to Saint Kancijan, a martyr. In 1173, the Patriarch of Aquileia, Udarlik, met with numerous dignitaries at the Church of Saint Kancijan. The present-day church represents a later chapter in its building history: after the fire of 1799, it was almost entirely rebuilt. Thus, an event from the 12th century and a much later reconstruction stand side by side as two distinct historical reference points.

Nature among trees, springs and gorges

The Bohačeva lipa is also known as Turnškova lipa and is considered a natural feature of local significance. The event “Večer pod trško lipo” takes place beneath its crown. Another distinctive natural feature is Župnekovo žrelo: the cave functions as an intermittent spring, or a spring shaft that releases water periodically. Admission is free, and the natural feature is easily accessible. Check local conditions before your visit.

The Tesna Gorge lies near Dol–Suha. It is about 50 metres long, more than 10 metres deep and approximately 2 metres wide. The three natural features are quite different: the linden tree is associated with a tree and an event, Župnekovo žrelo with its intermittent spring, and the Tesna Gorge with its narrow dimensions.

Cycling and activities

The Slovenia Green Wellness Route runs along the Ljubljana–Kamnik–Ljubno/Rečica–Velenje route, passing through the Ljubno/Rečica section. The route as a whole involves an average of about 40 kilometres of moderate cycling per day on mixed surfaces; more than two-thirds of it is paved. It can also be explored in shorter sections, such as on weekends, using rail connections.

Water sports, kayaking and rafting are among the activities on the Savinja in Rečica ob Savinji. Check seasonal availability in advance. The flight school Airurban operates at the launch site and offers panoramic flights and tandem skydives. At an altitude of 900 metres, Hof Borsečnik also has a paintball park on the highest-altitude farm in the municipality; it covers an area of 10,000 square metres. Check availability with the respective providers in advance.

Regional specialities and events

ŠtrukljiFest takes place every year on the last Sunday in August at the fire station grounds in Šentjanž/Grušovlje, in Rečica ob Savinji. The festival includes tastings of various kinds of štruklji and a rich cultural programme. If you are planning your trip around it, check the exact event date in advance.

Another regional speciality is zgornjesavinjski želodec. You can try it at the “Ocenjevanje želodcev” event or on a farm. Together with ŠtrukljiFest, food offers a distinct way to experience the region—whether your main interests are architectural history, nature or activities.
