The Šmihelska pot leads to Golte Landscape Park. Together with the protected settlement, it provides two distinct thematic focal points in Šmihel nad Mozirjem: a marked mountain hike and the history of the place. You can plan your trip according to your interest in physical activity or cultural heritage; the traditional Ovčarski praznik adds another cultural highlight.
Settlement and cultural heritage
Šmihel nad Mozirjem is designated a cultural heritage settlement. The protected area includes the original settlement pattern, with its road network, plot structure, loosely arranged buildings along the roads, and public and private open spaces. The protection therefore applies to the relationship between the different parts of the settlement, not just to a single building.
The wider area also has its own settlement character: Golte, Radegunda, Šmihel nad Mozirjem and Lepa Njiva are characterised by an indigenous dispersed settlement pattern of isolated farmsteads and small hamlets, particularly on the slopes. This description extends beyond the settlement centre and places Šmihel within a rural settlement pattern.
The church, houses and Vladimir Levstik
The construction history of St. Michael’s Church comprises several clearly distinguishable stages. The foundation stone was laid on 12 May 1602, the chancel was built in 1604, and the church was consecrated on 16 December 1631. Ivan Fantoni painted the interior in 1903. These dates distinguish the start of construction, the building of the chancel and the consecration—three separate milestones in the church’s history.
The history of the place is also linked to specific houses. Slovenian poet, writer and translator Vladimir Levstik (1886–1957) was born in Šmihel nad Mozirjem on 18 January 1886; a commemorative plaque was installed at his birth house in 1980. The Goličnik House at Šmihel 12 features a fresco and a cross. Together, these details show different connections to the place: the memory of a writer and visible features on a named house.
Hiking the Šmihelska pot
The Šmihelska pot is a marked, moderately difficult mountain hiking trail to Golte Landscape Park. The elevation gain is listed as 597.6 m, and the estimated walking time is 2 hours and 10 minutes. These figures help with two different aspects of planning: the elevation gain describes the ascent, while the walking time indicates the estimated time required. The starting point is at the primary school in Šmihel, at an elevation of 762.6 m. From Mozirje, take the main road to get there. As trail conditions can vary, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
The traditional Ovčarski praznik
The traditional Ovčarski praznik takes place in Šmihel nad Mozirjem. The festival includes a portrayal of rural life. If the event is an important reason for your trip, check the dates in advance. Planning for the festival differs from planning for the hike: the route has an estimated walking time and an elevation gain, while for the festival you should check the event date.
