On the Savinja, Ljubno ob Savinji brings together rafting history, sacred buildings and paths by the water. During a stay, you can explore the town according to your interests: those interested in cultural history will find stories in churches and historic houses; those who want to spend time outdoors can choose the riverside path or the Ob Ljubnici trail. When looking for an apartment, it helps to consider these different options when planning your days.

Rafting and paths along the Savinja

The interactive rafting collection can be visited independently during the main summer season, from 15 June to 15 September, and during school holidays, during the TIC’s opening hours from 08:00 to 16:00. Check seasonal visiting hours before your trip. At the KLS Cultural and Congress Centre, the Flosarska Pripoved programme presents a 500-year tradition of rafting on the Savinja. As part of the programme, visitors can experience a ride on a traditional raft; advance booking is required. The collection of Ljubno Palm Sunday bundles is recognised as intangible cultural heritage of national importance.

The 5.3-kilometre Ljubno riverside path runs along the Savinja and passes the Vrbje event area. There you will find the Preužitkarska House, an open-air mini-museum and the rafters’ hut. The Ob Ljubnici trail offers a different route: it starts beside the municipal building and takes about 30 minutes. Information boards explain the town’s natural and cultural heritage; depending on visibility, the trail offers views of the town centre and its hinterland, the ski jumping hill, the Smrekovec-Komen ridge, the Tirske peči below Golte, and Menina planina.

At the access point to the Savinja, visitors can watch kayak and rafting trips and prepare for a descent. Anglers will also find practical information: the Zgornjesavinjski fishing district of Ljubno, managed by the Ljubno Angling Association, is divided into four areas – Savinja 1, Savinja 2, Savinja 3, including the trophy section, and the fly-fishing pond by the fishermen’s house. Fishing permits are available at Ribiški dom Ljubno and several sales outlets in the surrounding area. As sales arrangements may change, check the options in advance.

Churches and historic houses

The Church of St Elizabeth is a Gothic building that lost its main Gothic features in the fire of 1798. The external Gothic buttresses and several frescoes on the outside walls have survived. Its organ was made in 1793 by Anton Scholz of Celje and extensively restored in 1992. Every year, Ljubno Palm Sunday bundles are blessed in the square in front of the church.

The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in Rosulje and has an octagonal bell tower. The present building was erected after the former church was demolished in 1830. The church is also known for a Gothic chalice dating from 1512. The Fašun House, also known as “Pri Fašunu,” is a designated cultural monument. Based on its condition and appearance, it is dated to the first half of the 19th century. A rare river-stone floor, known as “kuglflašter,” has been preserved in its entrance hall.

Traditions, events and sport

The Flosarski bal is an ethnographic event in Ljubno ob Savinji and is one of Slovenia’s oldest ethnographic events. At the traditional festival, you can see lime burning at Atelšek, between Ljubno and Luče on the Savinja, in person. It takes place every year one week before the first Sunday in August. Programme details may change; check the latest announcements before your trip. The Jožefov sejem is also traditionally held every year in Ljubno ob Savinji. Check the latest date and location details for this fair.

The town’s sporting profile includes the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup for women, with competitions held in Ljubno. The ski jumping facility has a plastic mat, which allows ski jumping during the warmer months as well. The Foršt Sports and Recreation Park has paved courts for football, basketball and volleyball; check their condition before your visit.
