Komarna Vas lies on the foothills of Kočevski Rog. Several cycling routes pass through or near the village, and Komarna Vas is also one of the starting points for a marked hike. Together with the evidence of Kočevar history, this offers a choice of different focuses: a walk on foot, cycling routes of varying lengths, or local cultural history.
Hiking in Kočevski Rog
The Krožna pešpot partizanskih bolnišnic is an easy, marked hiking trail, and Komarna Vas is one of its starting points. The route follows paths, logging tracks and forest roads. Along the way, it passes numerous natural and cultural features, especially water springs. So, if you are choosing a hike based on the character of the trail, this route combines several types of trail surface with natural and cultural points of interest. It is designated as a circular route; its specific characteristics are its easy rating, trail markings and the points of interest along the way mentioned above.
Cycling routes of varying lengths
The easy Volčja pot, at 24.4 kilometres, and Risova pot, at 23 kilometres, are similar in length. The challenging Medvedja pot is 33.6 kilometres long, while Gas na Gače is 9.8 kilometres long. This makes it possible to compare several cycling routes by their stated distance and, for three of these routes, by difficulty as well.
Risova pot passes through Komarna Vas and continues to the abandoned Kočevar settlement of Ponikve. Gas na Gače passes by the village and the old, abandoned Kočevar settlement of Štale. Medvedja pot starts at the Gače car park and passes by a farm in Komarna Vas. Komarna Vas, Sveta Marija and the Zgornji Hrastnik Partisan Hospital are along the route of Lisičja pot. It also leads to the Resa clearing, where there is a forestry hut, and continues to Črmošnjiške debele jelke. Remains of a forest railway built to transport timber are also located along the route.
Kočevar history and ruins
Above Komarna Vas, on the slope overlooking the abandoned village, stand the ruins of the Church of the Virgin Mary, Queen of All Saints. In 1741, the church was recorded as “Mary's Church” and as an old sanctuary of All Saints. It burned down in May 1942. Komarna Vas is also one of the nine Kočevar settlements currently listed in the Municipality of Semič. The church ruins and abandoned settlement provide a tangible connection to the history of the area; along Lisičja pot, the remains of the forest railway add another piece of evidence of timber transport.
Activities at Gače
Gače Adventure Park offers climbing courses and adventure challenges suitable for children and families. A short footpath leads to the park from the car park below the ski centre. At RTC Gače, adults and children can rent electric bikes for cycling on the forest roads of Kočevski Rog; availability may vary by season. Gače ski area has two cross-country ski trails and a toboggan run. These may also operate seasonally.
If you are planning to rent electric bikes or use the seasonal facilities at Gače, check their availability in advance.
