Štrekljevec offers several different points of interest for a stay: archaeological traces, a church with a historical role, and the Kalska domačija with a traditional hay barn. Nearby Osojnik, Brezova Reber and Kal offer a restored spring, an old lime tree, a church and a pond. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to consider what you are most interested in: would you like to focus on the history of the village, or also explore the distinctive features of nearby places?

Archaeological traces in Štrekljevec

The oldest archaeological finds in Štrekljevec date from the transition between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age and are estimated to be from around 1200 to 800 BC. Traces of Roman graves provide another point of reference. The archaeological site of Judničev vrt is also located in the village. Excavated finds from Štrekljevec are on display at the museum in Semič.

Together, these offer several perspectives on local history: early archaeological finds, Roman graves and a named archaeological site. The display of excavated finds at the museum in Semič adds a second place where the finds can be viewed.

Church, history and village life

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Štrekljevec is a branch church of the parish of Semič. In addition to serving for worship, the branch church in Štrekljevec was also a venue for cultural life, religious instruction and school activities. This role belongs to the village’s past and makes the church relevant to its religious and social history.

Another specific point of interest is the Kalska domačija in Štrekljevec, which includes a traditional hay barn. In the nearby village of Brezova Reber, there is also a church dating from the early 16th century. A lime tree described as 600 years old grows there as well. Together, these examples illustrate different historical connections: ecclesiastical history in Štrekljevec and Brezova Reber, and traditional rural architecture in Štrekljevec.

Places of interest nearby

In Osojnik, the spring and fountain known as “osojnski zdenc” were restored in 2004. The spring emerges through an opening between rocks that is 5 m high, 4 m long and 1 m wide. Its name, the year it was restored and its dimensions describe the place in specific terms, without conflating it with the archaeological sites in Štrekljevec.

In the nearby village of Kal, a pond lies among natural rocks. The Municipality of Semič restored it in 2011. The pond and the spring in Osojnik offer two different natural features: water among rocks in one place, and a spring emerging through an opening in the rock in the other. In Brezova Reber, meanwhile, the church and the lime tree described as 600 years old take centre stage.

Excursions and events

A forest excursion in June 2026 went from Štrekljevec to Osojnik. From Ivina češnja on Ivanji vrh, participants enjoyed views of Semič and the foothills of the Gorjanci. A cycling tour in June 2025 went from Semič to Štrekljevec. Both are examples of individual excursions from the past.

Events also offer insight into local cultural life. On 26 March 2026, a traditional event celebrating the March holidays took place at the Štrekljevec fire station. It was organised by the local primary school branch and PGD Štrekljevec; pupils contributed singing, dancing, recitations and performances on various instruments. A chestnut picnic was also held in Štrekljevec during the 2025 municipal holiday.

When planning your trip, you can therefore choose to focus on archaeological and ecclesiastical sites in Štrekljevec, or include individual nearby places in your stay. This can help you tailor your search for a holiday apartment to the topics that interest you most.
