The Kolonádový most, also known as Sklený most, is a national cultural monument and one of the outstanding examples of Slovak functionalist architecture. As Slovakia’s longest covered bridge, it brings architecture into focus as a distinct aspect of Pistian, alongside its spa attractions.
Bridges, architecture and exhibitions
Another bridge is the Krajinský most: this cultural monument dates from 1931, and a pedestrian walkway was later added on its upstream side. The two structures offer different architectural points of interest, and their history is not limited to a single period.
The Imricha Wintera Balneological Museum has its main premises and most important exhibitions in the Kúpeľná dvorana in the city park. Its permanent exhibitions cover the history of spas and spa culture in Slovakia, as well as sacred art. Regular temporary exhibitions are also held, including one about General Milan Rastislav Štefánik, an outstanding figure in modern Slovak history. Individual presentations may change; if you are visiting for a specific exhibition, check the current program in advance.
The Dom umenia Piešťany is located on the banks of the Váh in a large park and is a center of the city’s cultural and social life. It is one of the main co-organizers of the international Piešťany Festival, which has been held every year during the summer months since 1955. If you are visiting in summer, it is worth checking the dates of the events.
Elektrárňa Piešťany combines industrial history with an interactive exhibition: this restored industrial monument dates from 1906 and served as a municipal diesel power station for the city and surrounding communities until 1946. The renovated former generator hall houses a permanent exhibition about energy transformations and various aspects of their use. Guided tours are available for visitors; check the booking details in advance. The Military History Museum focuses on other historical themes: its permanent exhibitions cover the armaments of the Czechoslovak Army from 1945 to 1992 and Slovaks in uniform from 1848 to 2020. Stará lekáreň focuses on Slovak applied design, including glass, ceramics, jewelry, three-dimensional interior works, graphic art, painting and interior sculptures.
Spa Island and the landscape
Thermal mineral water and unique sulphurous healing mud formed the basis for the establishment of Kúpele Piešťany. The outdoor thermal swimming pool Eva is located on Kúpeľný ostrov. As it operates seasonally, check whether it will be open during your stay before visiting. A roughly 2.8-kilometer-long branch of the Váh surrounding the island is important for overwintering birds and aquatic plants.
The spa park on Kúpeľný ostrov offers walking paths among trees and flower beds. The island is also home to a mini-zoo, which is open to the public and houses, among other animals, owls and peacocks. Before your trip, check with local sources for up-to-date information on whether the mini-zoo is accessible.
Cycling routes, a loop trail and trips on the Váh
The Vážska cyklomagistrála starts at Kolonádový most and heads towards Trenčín; the section to Trenčín is about 50 kilometers long. Another option is the Cyklochodník Dubová, which heads towards the Sĺňava Reservoir; at Lodenica, it connects with the Kolookruh Sĺňava. The Kolookruh Sĺňava is a paved recreational and educational loop trail by the reservoir, suitable for cycling, walking and inline skating. You can allow about three hours to complete the whole loop on foot, or around 45 minutes by bike—a specific estimate depending on how you choose to cover the route.
Lodenica Piešťany is a sports and leisure center by the Sĺňava Reservoir, used for sporting events, competitions, recreational activities and outdoor events. Sightseeing trips on the Váh depart from the beginning of Kolonádový most and last 55 or 80 minutes. They are dependent on the season and weather; check whether trips are operating at the time of your visit before making plans.
