A nine-metre-high waterfall in the Hlboča Gorge, the Záruby peak and the Molpír archaeological site show how closely nature and history are connected in the Trnava Region. The region lies in southwestern Slovakia and borders the Czech Republic and Hungary. The waterfall is described as the only one in the Little Carpathians; its visibility depends on the season.

Karst Landscape and Trails

The Smolenický kras educational trail leads through the Hlboča Gorge to the Molpír site. As a recreational route, it is 7.5 kilometres long and has nine information stations. The Záruby peak can also be reached on a circular route from Smolenice: the trail is about ten kilometres long, moderately difficult and marked in yellow and blue. It is also suitable for younger children. At 767 metres, Záruby offers views across the entire Little Carpathians area.

A shorter and easier option is the Majdan educational trail. The 5.5-kilometre route focuses mainly on forestry and natural history. It can be walked in summer and winter, including on cross-country skis; winter conditions vary. The trails therefore differ not only in length: Smolenický kras focuses on recreation and information stations, Majdan on forests and natural history, while the circular route from Smolenice to the Záruby peak is classified as a moderately difficult hike. Check trail conditions and markings locally before setting out.

The natural attractions of the Trnava Region include the Little Carpathians, Driny Cave and the Smolenice karst area. In Trnava District, the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area includes the Hlboča and Záruby National Nature Reserves and the Driny Cave National Natural Monument. These protected sites are specifically identified: Hlboča is associated with the educational trail, Záruby with the peak, and Driny with the region’s karst area.

Castles and Cultural Heritage

Smolenický zámok tells the story of an architectural transformation: initially, it served as a watch castle built in the 14th century; later, it was converted into a romantic residence. Dolná Krupá Castle offers a different insight into cultural history with its Ludwig van Beethoven Memorial exhibition. Castle and exhibition opening hours vary. The park is open from 8 am to 8 pm. Check the latest opening hours before your visit.

In Trnava, the Arcibiskupský palác preserves rooms with Renaissance vaults and portals that together form a coherent Renaissance ensemble. The Západoslovenské múzeum is housed in the 13th-century building of the Poor Clare monastery. It holds collections in the natural sciences, history and ethnology, as well as a historical library. The many watermills along the Malý Dunaj River are also part of the Trnava Region’s cultural heritage.

Beekeeping and Wine Routes

The Včelovina complex combines a honey café with an educational herb and beekeeping garden. Experiential educational tours are offered for school groups, where children learn about flower species, the work of beekeepers and life in a beehive. Below Smolenický zámok, the Včelco cider house offers honey-based products and a tasting room. Visitors can learn more about production and special recipes there. Check the latest café and tour offerings, as well as tasting options, before visiting.

Cycling and winegrowing are also part of the region’s offerings: the wine-growing cycling circuit through the Trnava Region covers almost 100 kilometres of marked bike trails. It connects Trnava with wine-growing villages below the Little Carpathians and consists of three loops of varying lengths. Check the trail markings and surfaces before setting off. Smolenice is connected to Trnava by rail and regular interregional bus services. The village lies on the edge of the Little Carpathians and provides access to numerous hiking and cycling routes; check timetables before travelling.
