With six stops and a walking time of about four hours, the Jelenie jamy educational trail in Piešťany District makes a clear impression: over 12.5 kilometres, you’ll encounter natural history and culture. The self-guided hiking trail is open year-round and is rated moderate. Its stops introduce features of the adjoining part of the Považský Inovec. This makes it easy to assess the tour in terms of both time and character: it combines a longer hike with thematic stops along the way.
Sĺňava and Routes for Different Types of Tours
The Sĺňava reservoir lies in the wider area around Piešťany, covers approximately 480 hectares and was created on the Váh in the 1960s. In 1980, Sĺňava was designated a protected area for the conservation of waterbirds. The dates and stated conservation purpose tell two different aspects of the same landscape: the creation of the reservoir and the protection of waterbirds.
The paved Kolookruh recreational and educational loop runs around Sĺňava. It is suitable for cycling, walking and inline skating. The route description gives approximate guide times of around three hours on foot and 50 minutes by bicycle. This comparison helps you estimate the different time required for each mode of travel. Surface conditions may change; check them before setting out.
The Cyklochodník Dubová offers a different way to get around: it allows pedestrians and people exercising to cross Piešťany without coming into contact with car traffic. The cycle path is approximately 2.3 kilometres long. Natural history and cultural heritage are the main themes of the Šterusy–Rebro–Sprosná–Orlie skaly educational trail.
The Čerenec nature reserve protects rare forest-steppe plant and animal communities on Mesozoic limestone. It is also home to the richest population of large-flowered pasqueflower in the Little Carpathians. The Malá Vrbina educational trail combines practical wayfinding with accessibility: it runs along a paved path and is accessible to people with disabilities. Conditions may change, so check the route before your visit.
Piešťany and Vrbové: Architecture and Culture
In Piešťany, the Colonnade Bridge connects the pedestrian zone in the historic city centre with the spa island. The Kúpalisko EVA thermal swimming pool complex is located on the island. The spa park on the island is also part of Piešťany’s protected heritage zone. The bridge, park ensemble and thermal pool complex offer different ways to understand the spa island.
Since 2022, the Dom umenia Piešťany has been a national cultural monument and one of the main co-organisers of the international Piešťany Festival. The festival has been held annually during the summer months since 1955. During the season, Dom umenia hosts concerts; the Rieger-Kloss organ is regularly used for organ concerts. As individual programmes vary, check the latest dates if you’re planning to attend a concert.
In Vrbové, the leaning bell tower is presented as a tourist attraction and is one reason the town is known as “the Slovak Pisa”. The synagogue offers a different glimpse into the town’s architectural history: it was built in the Moorish style in 1882–1883. Together, the two buildings show how a place can be explored through distinctive architecture and historical dates.
Archaeology, Museums and Crafts
Kostolec preserves the foundations of a partially reconstructed Great Moravian manor house and a pre-Romanesque rotunda. The site lies at the western foot of the Považský Inovec and offers views over the lower Váh region. Here, archaeological remains meet a documented perspective on the landscape.
Kaštieľ Chtelnica is listed as a national cultural monument and has a park with a pond. The regional museum in the manor house presents the history of Chtelnica and its surroundings through historical, palaeontological and speleological exhibits. The Malokarpatská galéria in Chtelnica regularly presents changing exhibitions by regional artists across three floors. Here, you can explore history, natural history and contemporary regional art in different ways, without suggesting that a single tour treats all these subjects alike.
The ethnographic exhibition in Krakovany includes traditional costumes from Piešťany and Krakovany, embroidery and textiles typical of the region. Visitor information published in 2025 states that visits to the ethnographic museum in Krakovany are by prior arrangement. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm the current arrangements. Bobbin lace is regularly exhibited at the Krakovany bobbin lace festival in the Za krakovskú bránu Museum, which hosts the event.
Traditional techniques also take centre stage in Piešťany: Tradičné umelecké remeslá is an annual event showcasing folk art, traditional techniques and cultural heritage. The cultural offering thus ranges from architectural and museum history to crafts and recurring events.
