Šamorín offers several different starting points for a trip: religious buildings and exhibition venues, POMLÉ Forest Park, cycle paths along the Hrušov Reservoir, and the x-bionic® sphere sports and leisure centre. You can choose the focus of your stay according to the themes that interest you most – from architecture and local culture to cycling and sport.
Churches, synagogue and local history
The Reformed Church is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful churches on Žitný ostrov. Another striking feature of the town’s history is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: built to the designs of architect J. G. Altenburg, it was completed in 1778. Its richly decorated late Baroque interior includes ceiling frescoes, a high altar and four side altars. The two churches therefore offer different architectural points of reference – one for its importance on the island, the other for its period of construction and furnishings.
The synagogue in Šamorín also brings together several cultural influences. Built in 1912, it combines Romanesque architectural elements with Middle Eastern motifs; stained glass adorns the windows. Today, thanks to At Home Gallery, the synagogue serves as an exhibition space for works of art and occasionally as a concert hall. In practical terms, this means the venue is associated not only with architectural history but also with changing art exhibitions and occasional concerts.
The Mestský vlastivedný dom explores Šamorín’s traditions and displays tools used in urban crafts. Groups can also take part in an interactive gold-panning presentation there. Those interested in the town’s history will find a different perspective here than in the churches or synagogue: the focus is on everyday culture, crafts and a hands-on demonstration.
Forest park and cycling
The municipal POMLÉ Forest Park covers ten hectares and is located in the area of a former branch of the Danube. A nature trail introduces visitors to the natural value of floodplain forests. Cultural events are regularly held in the park’s amphitheatre. Nature and cultural programming are therefore two distinct aspects of the same forest park; when planning, you can decide whether to focus on the trail or an event.
The international Danube Cycle Path runs along the embankment of the Hrušov Reservoir on the edge of town. Signs guide cyclists from the reservoir into town and on to POMLÉ Forest Park. This route connects the Danube Cycle Path with a specific destination in Šamorín, without assuming a particular journey time. A day trip along a 38-kilometre stretch of the Danube is also possible: it runs from Hainburg an der Donau to Šamorín via Devínska brána and Bratislava.
Sport and other experiences
The x-bionic® sphere is a sports and leisure centre with facilities suited to professional and amateur sport, as well as relaxation and dining. The complex includes an Olympic equestrian centre. Numerous national and international competitions in show jumping, endurance riding and dressage are held at the centre throughout the year. Visitors can also ride there, and beginner courses are available.
The x-bionic® sphere also includes swimming pools, a wellness area, a cinema and a bar. Its combined sports, leisure and dining options are quite different from the cultural and historical sights and nature experiences in the forest park. If you are looking for a hotel in Šamorín, you can first consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay: churches and exhibitions, cycling and floodplain forest, or sport and leisure.
