In Dunajská Streda District, water takes many forms: thermal water, the subject of interactive technology exhibitions, and landscapes along former river branches and waterways. Discoveries range from pools and a natural lake to the Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Power Plant and a guided tour on the Malý Dunaj. Mills, museums and historic buildings offer further perspectives.

Thermal Water at Two Distinct Facilities

Thermalpark Dunajská Streda covers 18 hectares. Its facilities include four indoor and six outdoor pools, as well as a natural lake offering opportunities for swimming, relaxation and water sports. The thermal water reaches temperatures of up to 39 °C. It is said to have a beneficial effect on the musculoskeletal system.

THERMAL CORVINUS Veľký Meder also offers geothermal water, in pools with temperatures ranging from 26 to 38 °C. The facility includes seven year-round pools and six outdoor pools, including a wave pool, a children’s pool and a SprayPark. The baths are located in an 80-hectare forest park. The facilities and services at both thermal parks may change over time.

Technology, River and Mills

At the Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Power Plant, the Infocentrum combines information with interactive experiences. Visitors can explore interactive exhibitions and virtual 3D tours with holographic projections; simulations illustrate the work of a power plant operator. The auditorium offers interactive educational activities on water, energy, the hydroelectric power plant and renewable energy for school groups and the general public. The programme may change.

A full tour of the hydroelectric power plant lasts 60 to 80 minutes. It is offered in Slovak and Hungarian for school pupils, students and adults; book in advance, as booking arrangements may change. This distinguishes a visit to the exhibitions from a guided tour, which is best planned separately in advance.

The Vodný mlyn Dunajský Klátov is a technical and cultural attraction on the Klátovské rameno of the Malý Dunaj in Dunajský Klátov. Its permanent exhibition on water milling features original equipment. A different way to experience the river is the summer route Náučný chodník Od mlyna k mlynu: a 10-kilometre guided water route by motor raft between the water mill in Tomášikovo and Alba Regia in Jahodná. The route is one-way and must be booked in advance. Take both details into account when planning, as this is not a circular route you can start spontaneously.

Cultural Heritage and Living Traditions

The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in Dunajská Streda. It was originally a Gothic church dating from the 14th century. The Yellow Manor House dates from the first half of the 18th century and houses the Žitnoostrovné Museum. Its exhibitions span archaeology and palaeontology, as well as art and ethnography. A visit to the manor house therefore covers several subjects, from natural and human history to artistic and cultural collections.

The Vermesova vila in Dunajská Streda is an outpost of the Slovak National Gallery. It presents works of art and hosts cultural events; the programme may change. The Žitnoostrovský jarmok offers a different cultural experience. Since the tradition was revived in 1980, it has been held annually in September, except in 2020 and 2021. The fair has developed into a cultural and gastronomic festival. It features traditional food and drinks, a craft street and a wine corridor, as well as performances by folk singing and dance groups. Young people can learn about traditional crafts there. Check the programme and dates before travelling.

Nature and Cycling Routes

The Číčovské mŕtve rameno National Nature Reserve is considered one of the most valuable areas in Podunajsko for its scientific and landscape qualities. It is the best-preserved former branch of the Danube outside its floodplain. Of the reserve, 52.28 hectares lie within the cadastral territory of Kľúčovec and 27.59 hectares within that of Číčov. The self-guided circular trail Náučný chodník Číčovským mŕtvym ramenom connects with a blue-marked hiking trail and several marked cycling routes. Important for planning: the nature trail is accessible only from 15 July to the end of February.

The main differences between two cycling routes are their length and course. The 53.5-kilometre circular route to the ship mills starts and ends in Dunajská Streda. It has only minor elevation changes, is considered easy and is recommended for families with children. The 73.5-kilometre cycling route through Žitný ostrov runs from Dunajská Streda past the Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Power Plant towards Komárno. It is almost flat, following state roads and the Danube embankment, forms part of the International Danube Cycle Route and offers the opportunity to visit the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The first route is a loop; the second is a longer ride towards Komárno. Signage, surfaces and conditions may change.
