In Hviezdoslavov, local history can be read in its buildings: the former buildings of the Pálffy manor house stand at the western corner of the village square, the monument is in the park on the square, and a tall bell tower stands opposite the park. There are also varied floor plans, buildings’ former uses, the landscape of the western Žitný ostrov and public spaces. This mix offers you different priorities when choosing a destination: architectural history, regional character or public amenities.

Village Square: Manor House, Monument and Bell Tower

Several historical landmarks are precisely located around the village square. The former buildings of the Pálffy manor house stand at its western corner. In the park on the square is a monument to Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, dating from 1971. It was created by academic sculptor Tibor Baník and academic architect R. Janák. Opposite the park stands a tall bell tower with an iron structure. The dates refer to different events: the tower’s bell was hung on 9 April 1934, and the bell tower was consecrated in September 2007. The site can therefore be explored through its buildings, artistic design and clearly distinct historical events.

Architectural Styles and Former Uses

The buildings of the Pálffy manor house combine a distinctive architectural style with a former public function. The first Slovak school on Žitný ostrov was housed in the east wing. The manor house’s single-storey buildings have a U-shaped floor plan and features of agricultural buildings from the second half of the 19th century. The school’s history is therefore part of this place, as is its architectural form.

Another striking architectural style is represented by the “Jubilejná škola 1928”. This single-storey functionalist building was constructed in 1928–1929 and has an L-shaped floor plan. The comparison with the U-shaped floor plan of the manor house buildings is clear: both groups of buildings are single-storey, but their floor plans differ significantly.

In Podháj, the large Wiener-Welten stable is a striking local building. It was a cowshed; beside the side entrance were a milk room and an ice cellar. These former rooms bring another aspect of local history to life, distinct from the school and functionalist architecture: here, the focus is on agricultural use.

Landscape and Public Space

Hviezdoslavov lies in the lowlands of the western Žitný ostrov and has fertile chernozem soils. This description of the landscape complements the view of the locality, which can be read particularly clearly through its historic buildings.

Vodozádržný Park Hviezdoslavov is a green oasis in the locality. Its features include a fountain, landscaped gardens, street furniture and a water-bound path. The park is intended as a community space for residents to meet, play and cool off, especially during periods of summer heat. The project thus combines several functions: it includes landscaped areas and paths, while also being designed for community use in summer. A Public Sports Facility in Pažiť

Športový areál Bez bariér is a public sports facility in Hviezdoslavov. It is located in the Pažiť area, close to the new primary school. Together with the historic buildings and the park, the facility shows that local landmarks are not limited to the area’s history. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are most interested in architectural styles and former uses, the landscape or public spaces.
