Kraľovany lies in the Ľubochňa Gorge at the confluence of the Orava and Váh. The landscape is connected to the Little and Great Fatra mountains, and also features a flooded quarry lake, hiking trails and traces of history. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: the river landscape, a hike to Stoh or the history of the village.
River Landscapes and Mountain Areas
The northern part of Kraľovany belongs to the Little Fatra, while the southern part lies in the Great Fatra. Protected areas are also part of the municipality: the cadastral area of Kraľovany includes an area within the Little Fatra National Park and the protection zone of the Great Fatra Protected Landscape Area. The Kraľoviansky meander is a rare type of river landform. Here, the Váh cuts through a spur of the Great Fatra; the protected area covers 18 hectares.
The landscape and mountain conditions provide habitats for brown bears, wolves, badgers and lynxes. The wildcat occurs sporadically. The surrounding forests are also part of the nature experience, with opportunities for hiking and cycling. The different themes allow for active days as well as taking in the landscape, without every activity needing to have the same focus.
Hiking to Stoh
Stoh is a prominent grassy peak at an elevation of 1,607.4 metres. It lies on the main ridge of the Kriváň section of the Little Fatra and serves as a viewpoint with panoramic views, especially of the neighbouring peaks of Veľký Rozsutec and Poludňový grúň. A green-marked hiking trail leads from the village to the summit.
One route to Stoh starts at Kraľovany railway station, goes via Žobrák to the summit, then returns via Žobrák to the station. This makes the starting and return point part of the tour planning, not just the summit itself. Check the trail markings locally, as seasonal changes in trail conditions may be relevant to your plans.
Quarry Lake and Local History
A flooded quarry lake in the Kraľovany-Rieka district is used for recreation. It offers a different landscape from the forest trails and Stoh summit. You can therefore choose between river and mountain scenery, outdoor activities and the village’s historical themes during your stay.
The earliest surviving mention of the Kraľovany settlement dates to 1363. It refers to a trade route from Sučany through Kraľovany to Ružomberok. Another historical landmark is the Evangelical church, built between 1912 and 1913 and consecrated on 19 October 1913. Rafting is also part of the village’s history. It reached its heyday in Kraľovany, and the tradition continued until the middle of the 20th century.
Getting There and Planning Accommodation
Kraľovany is an important railway junction for line 180 from Žilina to Košice and line 181 from Kraľovany to Trstená. For a stay focused on hiking, the route from the railway station is a useful starting point for planning. If you are looking for a hotel in Kraľovany, you can plan your hiking idea and arrival day together. Check the timetable for your travel dates and the trail markings locally before setting out on a hike.
