A rocky outcrop above the Orava River is crowned by Orava Castle in Oravský Podzámok—an impressive starting point for exploring Dolný Kubín District. The castle was originally built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and later remodelled in the Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. Its architectural history thus tells of several successive eras at the same site.

The Castle and Its Architectural History

Kaštieľ Kubínyi also combines different building phases: it dates from the 17th century and was extensively remodelled in the Baroque style in 1750. Guided tours cover the Renaissance and Baroque sections and last about 40 minutes; advance booking is required. Check the current booking times and admission arrangements before your visit. At Orava Castle, the ticket office is below the castle rock; tickets cannot be purchased on the castle grounds. Check the latest visitor information in advance.

Art, Books and Personal Memories

The Oravská galéria is housed in the 17th-century Župný dom on Hviezdoslavovo námestie. Its five permanent exhibitions take visitors through a range of subjects: they showcase old art from the 15th to the 19th century, icons, 20th-century Slovak art, woodcarving from the Orava region and traditional folk art. Here, different periods and artistic forms of expression come together in one exhibition venue.

The Čaplovičova knižnica holds a collection of books dating from the 14th to the 21st century. It also displays map collections, museum objects, manuscripts and incunabula. The Múzeum šľachtických kočiarov a saní focuses on something different: its 21 exhibits include pieces in their original or restored condition. In Florinov dom, a memorial room dedicated to Thea Herkeľ Florin preserves original furnishings and personal belongings, along with biographical photographs and texts.

Wooden Church and Archaeological Traces

The wooden church in Leštiny is an Evangelical Articular Church dating from 1688, with a wooden bell tower. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008. Other traces of the past can be found on Tupá skala: there is a hillfort built and used by the Lusatian culture, as well as a cremation burial ground. Ostrá skala and Tupá skala have been designated a protected area since 1972, covering 22.30 hectares and classified under the fourth level of protection.

Landscape and Routes

Párnické jazerá consists of 21 lakes of varying sizes. They formed after gravel was extracted from the floodplain of the Orava River—a history that draws the eye to the landscape as much as the lakes’ changing sizes do. If you prefer to follow a route, you can use the Dolný Kubín–Oravský Podzámok–Leštiny cycling loop as a guide: it starts and ends in Dolný Kubín and follows gravel and asphalt roads.

In Zázrivá, the educational trail is two kilometres long, has eight information panels and can also be completed by bicycle. Another way to explore a local craft is the cheese-making demonstration at Syrex Zázrivá. Visitors can pull their own cheese strings, called “vojky,” and weave Korbáčiky. Book this experience in advance.

Winter and Seasonal Experiences

SKI PARK Kubínska hoľa has 14 kilometres of downhill runs and ten kilometres of cross-country trails. There are also nine downhill runs of all difficulty levels, a freeride zone and a snow park. As seasonal operations may change, check the latest information before planning a winter trip. The access road to Kubínska hoľa is paved and maintained so that snow chains are not required; nevertheless, check the current conditions before travelling in winter.

Water and river activities also come with their own conditions. The Aquarelax Dolný Kubín water park has a range of water attractions; its summer outdoor area includes a children’s pool, sports courts, a climbing wall and a rope park. Check seasonal availability before your trip. The Plavba plťou raft trip runs from Horná Lehota below Orava Castle to Oravský Podzámok. The one-hour trip includes expert commentary on the history of rafting on the Orava River. As operating times are seasonal, check the trip schedule in advance.
