The Žilina Region reveals its contrasts in both its built heritage and natural landscapes: in Vlkolínec, a medieval settlement preserves the wooden architecture typical of hilly and mountainous regions; in Jánošíkove Diery, gorges, waterfalls and marked trails define the scenery. There are also museums, traditional crafts and a forest railway with a unique reversing system.

Wooden architecture and preserved traditions

Vlkolínec is a remarkably well-preserved rural medieval settlement. Its wooden architecture is considered typical of hilly and mountainous regions. In 1993, Vlkolínec was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Anyone interested in traditional building styles can get a close-up look here at a settlement pattern passed down through the generations.

Čičmany is also known for its folk architecture. The village has more than 130 houses; the exterior walls of the wooden houses are decorated with white geometric patterns. Part of Čičmany was declared a folk architecture monument reserve in 1977. Folk traditions are still preserved there today. Together, Vlkolínec and Čičmany reveal two distinct facets of the region’s architectural and everyday culture.

Gorges, waterfalls and trails

Wooded mountains cover most of the Žilina Region. One striking natural landscape is Jánošíkove Diery, also known as Diery: a system of gorges and canyons in the Krivánska Malá Fatra. The area is home to more than twenty waterfalls. Marked hiking trails run through the gorges, with footbridges, ladders and chains. These routes are quite different from the marked hiking and cycling routes to Vlkolínec, which start from Ružomberok, Malinô Brdo, Hrabovo and Biely Potok.

The trails cater to different interests, and you don’t need to take the same kind of trip to enjoy them: the gorges and waterfalls are the main attractions in Diery, while the routes to Vlkolínec bring you closer to the historic settlement. Trail markings and conditions may change, so check the latest local information before setting out on a hike.

Museums, crafts and railway history

The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin is Slovakia’s largest open-air ethnographic exhibition. Its 15.5-hectare grounds contain almost 150 structures. Some are furnished and open to visitors. Themed events showcase traditional production, crafts, customs and folklore; dates vary for individual events.

The museum also includes the reconstructed section of the former Kysucko-Orava Forest Railway, from Kubátkovia station to Beskyd saddle. You can experience another forest railway in Vychylovka, where visitors can ride a train with a unique reversing system. Check operating dates before travelling. Budatín Castle, meanwhile, houses an exhibition on the craft of wire-working, said to be the only one of its kind in the world. The castle stands at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers in the Budatín district of Žilina and is surrounded by a historic park.

Koliba Lubenná is a place to try traditional Slovak dishes. Its menu includes Bryndzové halušky and Šúľance, among other dishes. Visitors can also buy homemade bread, Posúchy, Pagáče and buns from its own bakery range; availability may vary.
